im currently thinking bout getting another one of these 580wt one and was wondering if it will be enough for this set up

e6750 * once it comes out*
evga 8800gts
1 74gb raptor
1 500gb sata hd
antec nine hundred
watercooling unit
2 x 1gb crucial ram

if not what are other good options?
 
They are decent PSUs and i use the 580W Type-R myself. While it is able to offer a meax of 30A on the combined +12v rails i would not recomend using it on a system with an 8800 GTS. Especialy with a quad core CPU as well. I would recommend a PSU with about 32A or better on the +12v rails. Make sure it is a PSU with 3 or more rails. Even better would be a single railed PSU with 32A or better.
 
If it's not the modular Hiper (HPU-4M580) I'm going to contradict mpilch here and say the Hiper is more than adequate. A single 8800GTS doesn't use that much power and the CPU has it's own rail (+12V2) so there's plenty of power for even a quad core.

If it's the modular Type-R, I would definitely NOT use that PSU for either a Socket 775 board or SLI or a single graphics card requiring more than one PCI-e connector.

If it is the TYpe-R, there's a couple reasons why you shouldn't use it for the build you list:

1. No native 8-pin EPS12V connector. The 580W only provides the 4-pin. You can use just the four, but I've seen pins on the board burn when trying to power high power Intel CPU's with only two hot wires and two grounds. You could use a 4 to 8-pin adapter, but as it is the two +12V leads on the 4-pin are split off of a single wire and the two grounds are split off of a single wire creating a lot of resistance, so adding an adapter to that is only going to make things worse. Pins on the board might not burn up, but connector on the PSU will, if the PC even has a chance to run that long.

2. There's only one native PCI-e connector. The 8800GTS needs two. Sure, there's a Molex to PCI-e adapter, but that's not necessarily a good solution for the same reasons using a 4-pin to 8-pin adapter for CPU power isn't a good solution.

If it's the one in your sig and that part number is correct, you have a black Type-R. If so, ditch it. Sell it with your old parts... it's a good PSU, but it's antiquated by today's standards and completely unsuitable for a modern, high-end machine.

 
I have a setup almost exactly like yours but with more HD's running this PS (modular) and an 8800gts. I have had no problems at all, none. Also, unlike mentioned in a previous post, my Evga 8800GTS does not require 2 pci-e connectors (?)

you have the 580 type-r? and your doing fine? eerrh.. now im getting confused...

as for my sig, im keeping that psu with that rig, im looking to purchase a brand new psu and was curious if i can just purchase the same thing or if i needed to find a different brand.

I would really not watch to sacrifice the convenience of a modular psu, so if anyone can recommend a modular psu and the approoriate wattage for it, ill be very thankful

That's like the guys that say "go ahead and run your uber rig on a 300W PSU. It'll work." I never said it wouldn't work... initially. I just wouldn't do it long term.

All of the Intel boards I've seen with burnt EPS12V connectors weren't burned up within a day or two of use. They were from months and months of use. The voltages will be lower, and how long will it take for that to have an undesirable effect on your components? Why chance it? Electrically... mechanically... common sense should dictate it's not a good idea. Hiper themselves will tell you that their connectors are limited to only a max of 7A load each because all power is being delivered by a single 14g wire.

 
so again, i dont mind at all having to change to a different company

what would be a good psu to use for my up coming set-up
a psu that would properly deliver the right amount of power to the right places

i dont care what the brand is but i would prefer a modular psu
 
There's plenty of modular power supplies that would be more than adequate.

Seasonic, Corsair, Ultra, Antec....

None will have an issue.

It's not because the Hiper is modular that it's not going to work well. It's the way they went about it. Fortunately for you, they're very unique in the execution. I can't think of any other brand that would present the same problem.
 
how much wattage will i need? i would like something to i could keep until i get a x38 and sli for the future... 700-800 enough?


btw... is ultra actually a good brand? i always thought there products were considerd "value or cheap " products compared to seasonic or corsair / antec
 
Again, wattage is not the issue. Is a 700 to 800W enough? Yes. But so is a 500W or 600W. You're only talking about one 8800GTS card.

You did a ninja edit on me. 😉 Ultra has a full line from el cheapo V-Series to the quite high end X3. Read some reviews.

How do I know that the Corsair is in your price range? That you'd appreciate modular? That you didn't care for an LED fan? That you'd be just as happy with a 5 year warranty over a Lifetime warranty? That the cables are long enough? That the fan is quiet enough?

I don't recommend power supplies. I make that a rule. I just try to educate.

That's because when I see people jump in and say "get this" or "get that" I perceive them as a fan boy or a shill and I don't want to be perceived that way myself. That and there's always someone with a good reason to suggest not using a particular product too.

I wait for people to ask if something is right for them and then I'll give a thumbs up or thumbs down.

The only choice that you're going to be 100% happy with is one that you make on your own... with the approval of others.
