They dominate pop culture, pro athletics and produce presidential candidates. wtf are you talking about??
Black people accurately represent America. The ones doing well are doing really well. The ones doing not so well are doing horrible and are getting worse. That's part of my point though. Despite their success, they still feel like they are held back. The reality is, they hold themselves back.

Wow, can't believe this thread received so many replies. Definitely opened my eyes, especially the point about hip hop being today's version of rock and roll. I agree with that and agree that it's not hip hop, it's whatever's popular at the time that gets blasted the most. Also, there are extreme sub-groups in all cultures, as destrekor pointed out. I think I get annoyed at the sub-groups and try to apply that anger to the entire culture, which is wrong.
I did want to respond to BD231, though. You accuse me of being irrational and juvenile, yet you make several irrational and juvenile statements and assumptions of your own. Tribal drums while chanting? Kids in Oakland growing up wanting to be criminals? I think those statements show how little you think you know about the lives of people that you think I have zero affiliation with. Oh wait, you don't know that. You assumed that I have zero affiliation with them. I could go on but you've already got your mind made up.
At the end of the day, I just wish people would be considerate and treat others how they would like to be treated. We're all a part of the human culture.
You never noticed that before? It goes back every generation. Before that jazz and swing was evil and would send you to hell.
Yeah well, hip hop was evil when *I* was growing up, didn't realize it would still be 20 years later.
That's part of my point though. Despite their success, they still feel like they are held back. The reality is, they hold themselves back.
I wouldn't really equate a few rare cases as a good generalization for the success of the entire race. You're speaking about a handful of people, the majority can't get ahead due to many factors, them holding themselves back is definitely a part of it. But what about other factors? I went to a high school that was about 70% black, the rest were mostly mexican with a few whites and asians scattered. The school had zero college prep classes and the highest level of math we had was pre-albera. It's hard to even want to try to succeed when the deck is so vastly stacked against you. Racism alive and well in the US, and no Obama and a few rappers and ball players aren't proof otherwise. But even more that than it's not just race, it's also how the country treats poor people. Rappers almost all came from poverty, and the way of government ignores the downtrodden in the USA is fucking disgraceful.

But it isn't fair to say that any of those ingredients are the reason black people are held back, because all races deal with it. I'm poor and live in the hood, but I ain't black. The whole education system sucks to begin with. I never took college prep courses and never needed to, working on 2nd degree right now. It's about motivation, but despite people bending over backwards to get them to succeed, they aren't motivated. There is special consideration with loans and jobs just because you are black. No excuses.
