It's simple, it comes down to social circles and pop culture. As a teenager, they have much larger social circles and do need to be viewed as "cool" because they have more of a need for social validation. As a result, anything in pop culture that is considered "cool" (esp things that parents hate) will be exhibited by teens. Kids blasting rap is a manifestation of that.

Don't think for a minute that your parents' generation didn't blast rock and roll when they were that age.

I agree with that and agree that it's not hip hop, it's whatever's popular at the time that gets blasted the most. Also, there are extreme sub-groups in all cultures, as destrekor pointed out. I think I get annoyed at the sub-groups and try to apply that anger to the entire culture, which is wrong.

Tribal drums while chanting? Kids in Oakland growing up wanting to be criminals? I think those statements show how little you think you know about the lives of people that you think I have zero affiliation with. Oh wait, you don't know that. You assumed that I have zero affiliation with them. I could go on but you've already got your mind made up.

At the end of the day, I just wish people would be considerate and treat others how they would like to be treated. We're all a part of the human culture.

I wouldn't really equate a few rare cases as a good generalization for the success of the entire race. You're speaking about a handful of people, the majority can't get ahead due to many factors, them holding themselves back is definitely a part of it. But what about other factors? I went to a high school that was about 70% black, the rest were mostly mexican with a few whites and asians scattered. The school had zero college prep classes and the highest level of math we had was pre-albera. It's hard to even want to try to succeed when the deck is so vastly stacked against you. Racism alive and well in the US, and no Obama and a few rappers and ball players aren't proof otherwise. But even more that than it's not just race, it's also how the country treats poor people. Rappers almost all came from poverty, and the way of government ignores the downtrodden in the USA is fucking disgraceful.

OK, first let me say that hip hop is now a worldwide phenomenon. There's kpop hip hop, cpop hip hop, European hip hop, etc. So not *all* hip hop embodies what I'm going to say next, but like I mentioned in my OP, when I think of hip hop the first thing that comes to mind is bling bling rap videos and what not, from black people, coming from poverty, making it big.

As some people have already pointed out in this thread, the ones who do make it big are few and far between. So you combine that perception that you can make tons of money overnight by being a rapper (or a pro athlete) with a lack of education, and a lack of importance placed on education, and you have an enormous group of people who are "held back."

It also doesn't help that the government gives them handouts. So, you don't have to work, you don't have to contribute to society, and the government still helps you out. There goes the motivation.

Who's bending over backwards to get them to succeed? I assure you there aren't many people who are bending over backwards to help minorities, and the ones who are aren't enough to help but a tiny number. This isn't a movie like Dangerous Minds of Freedom Writers. Those are both great, based on true stories. But again you're making the exception out to be the rule.
