I built a new computer and loaded Win98 and Win2000. I booted into both no problem -- everything looks normal. So I start loading drivers and programs for the video card in Win2000. I have been working on getting the bugs worked out for a few days now (an ATI Radeon 8500DV--Major headache, but that's another story!!). Now I decide to boot into Win98 and load programs into it and that?s when the problems started. Here is the first screen that came up:
"While initializing device IOS:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer."
Then it shuts down automatically. When it restarts, it says:
"Windows did not finish loading on the previous attempt. Choose safe mode, to start Windows with a minimal set of drivers" - which I try to do. Then it tries to start but then says:
"HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 00F00002
XMS driver not installed."
Then says:
" To continue starting your computer, press ENTER" -- which I do and then I get this:
"HIMEM.SYS is missing.
Make sure that the file is in your Windows directory."
Followed by this:
"Widows has stopped. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart your computer."
Then the whole process starts over again.
This is the first time I have tried booting into 98 since I loaded and tested it. I booted fine last time, and I haven?t' loaded or done anything in 98 since then. I have 98 on the C drive and 2000 on the D drive. The only files or programs I have loaded have been on Win2000 on the D drive -- nothing on the C drive. What could have changed since last time I booted into 98??? It says "HIMEM.SYS is missing" I am not familiar with this and did a search on the Win98 CD and could not find any file named HIMEM. Any ideas????? THANKS!!
