I just formatted my drive, did a COMPLETELY STANDARD Windows XP pro install and booted into windows.

The FIRST THING I did aside from changing the speed of my mouse pointer was go to Windows Update, which subsequently failed due to a 'software error'.

Sigh.

Yeah. I'm on my 6th time installing the DirectX 9.01b update. Never seems to want to remember that it ALREADY INSTALLED IT!

why not just install the network version of SP2? it has all the updates? i would have had it slipstreamed into your windows xp install cd

I'm not sure what you people do to mess up your installs so badly -- I have never had these kinds of headaches.

Fourthed.

How far do you go? Does it try to install, or is it still working on the download?

Could be a problem with a firewall or other network equipment if it won't let you download, something that really ISN'T windows' fault.

Agreed.

what all of them said. i have only had to reformat because of force-rebooting while there was heavy harddrive access going on in the OS partition.
