Engineering: I try to use the melee (pronounces it extra feminine like, MAY LAY)

Melee: \'ma-?la

How dare he pronounce it correctly.

That said, it's extremely unprofessional to behave as you described. If your description is indeed accurate then he sounds like someone who's not going to go much further than his current position.

ZV

I disagree, he already solved the problem, he was just trying to bring some human factor to the conversation...

Would you have the same opinion if he talked about last night's superbowl game instead? If not, then what makes his comments about Halo unprofessional? If so, then you are a robot :p

That's the correct pronunciation. Apparently, amongst the great unwashed, it is now considered "extra feminine" to pronounce certain French sourced, latin derived English words correctly.

I wonder how the OP pronounces Chevrolet?

where ahm from, boy, we pronounce it "Schev."

I just took a road trip from houston to New Orleans for some marti gras bourbon street fun, and on the drive I was listening to the radio (ipod is fubar). I heard several country singers refer to their trucks as "Schevs."

I know 'may lay' is correct. I just personally thought it's funny because he pronounced it with EXTRA enunciation... like "I tried to use the MAYY LAYYYY weapon". rofl. It's already bad enough he's talking about games on a biz call, he drops words like MAY LAYYYYY.
.

i cant count how many engineers/ project managers/ suppliers i talk to regularly about WoW while at work related meetings/ calls and just chatting onsite. i think of it as a bonder. something to bring us to a common ground outside the job, it tends to help us connect within the confines of work. theres one operator at one of the plants i upgraded recently that actually plays horde on my server (im alliance on stormreaver). he actually gave me his char names and told me what area he was leveling in. he was in STV on a high 30s char, so i took my 60 rogue (before TBC) and made sure to welcome him to the server. i also told my guildies in the area to welcome him, since they were his level and in the same area anyway... that was a year and a half ago, and he still talks about it to this day. he thought it was hilarious, and still looks for our guild tag to try to kill us.

as for pronouncing the word, i dont really care how its pronounced, i will pronounce it both ways on occasion.

Personally I'm tired of the American cult of anti-intellectualism that regards it as negatively bourgeois to have a good vocabulary.

I'm not saying what the guy did was appropriate, but how can anyone defend not using the correct pronunciation of a word when they know it?

LMAO! I find you pronouncing melee mel-EE more amusing than the engineer in your OP.

You should see my computer science class. We talk about video games with the teacher half the time.

"Hey, [teacher], have you played kotor?"
"What the hell is kotor?"
"Uh, knights of the old republic. Duh."
"Oh yeah, played that. And 2. But come on, kotor?"

That actually happened today. Awesome class. We only program java about 1/4 of the time.

OK, people are missing the point of the thread. I get the impression that it's not the general pronunciation itself, but this individual's particular pronunciation of the word. And since I have a friend who says may-lay all nasally and such, I do find it hilarious, sir.
