hiking

Will be my first time... approx 4.5 hours... what are things I need to look out / be prepared for ?

Also, the to-bring list:
- sneakers
- flashlight (in case)
- food/drinks
- hat
- extra clothes
- knife
- camera

That's just off the top of my head in the 15 seconds that preceded this sentence... anything else ?

EDIT>>> The ATOT-help list (thx!)
- map / compass
- matches
- poncho
- sunscreen

map of the area (the most important item)
compass is useful too if you know how to use em 😛
a waterproof poncho is handy
matches dont weigh anything and could save your life
and duct tape just for fun and role playing McGyver?

First time hiking? Ever?

If it will be rocky (rocky mtns) or wet/muddy, you'll want some boots.

Sunscreen if it is sunny.

Plenty of water.

My wife and I go hiking a lot. We usually don't even take anything other than the clothes on our back. If we go back to the car afterward, we don't even take water with us.

You need to tell us about the hike itself.

It's almost like asking what to wear on your vacation, but not telling us if it's an Alaskan expedition, or a tropical cruise.

Map, different clothes in case weather changes, and leave a note or tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.

All I know is that it'll be morning - mid-day in/around Harriman State Park in "upstate" NY. I've been in the area many times... so I know what to expect in terms of area... but along any/all hiking trails, I'd assume preparations are the same ?

EDIT>>> Correction: 4-5 hours total hike roundtrip.

Ah man, I know Harriman like the back of me hand. I like the loop with the nice view of Indian Pt. Nuclear power plant and hudson river. Lots of turkeys on that trail too, some seem to have 3 eyes 😉 No really, great place to hike, I go there alot of really love it.

I have driven by it. Not too far away from civilization.

Yeu want rain gear/wind breaker, but that may be on your list.

If you can lay your hands on them, FRS radios might be nice, just in case.

BTW, sneakers suck for hiking. If you can afford them, get some hiking boots. You don't need to spend hundreds.

Yeah, boots would be nice, but if you don't have 'em and don't plan on hiking alot then don't worry about it. Unless it's a muddy day, the sneakers will be fine for Harriman. I'll usually wear my sneakers at Harriman even though I have some good boots.

I remember seeing a cool black racer snake at Harriman, I have pics but they're home. I can post em for you if you're interested 🙂 Also a little garter snake I caught there once.

edit: and remember to follow your trail using the color markers on trees and/or rocks. Don't just follow any beaten path, make sure you look up every once in a while to make sure you're still on the right color trail.

It would be good to have hiking boots, but it doesn't sound like you'll have time to break in a pair and might be better off sticking with the sneakers. Breaking in boots on the trail sucks, blisters and pain are no fun.

But do bring enough drinking water and small snack for a pick me up to get back to the car.

Remember to check the weather so you can take the appropriate clothing, best thing to do is layer.
