Any tips on what to bring? It's going to be cool at the top (probably in the low 50s) so I'm going to be packing a couple layers and a light windbreaker. Not sure if we'll actually make it all the way to the peak or not.

So far I have:

Backpack (lightweight day pack)
Fleece pull over
Folding pocket knife
Water
Snacks

Debating on wearing my hiking boots or just wearing sneakers.

Stats on the mountain?

Well, this will be around an 11 mile hike starting at 8,500'. The peak is over 10,000' and temps should be in the mid 60s to low 70s but it will be breezy and partly cloudy. Temps have been getting down in the low 40s at night so I expect it to be quite cool in the AM and late afternoon. No rain expected.

Yes, I'll bring a small P&S digital camera.

good luck jules! i just did jacinto, baldy, gorgonio and whitney this past summer. for all the hikes i just used adidas running shoes from costco and was fine. i also took with me a camelbak, snacks (gu chomps are my favorite), a couple pb&j sandwiches, a nalgene bottle so i could mix a gatorade or a tea drink, and since it'll be colder than when i went its wise to take the fleece or a breaker. since you'll be going through some elevation change i took excederin with me for gorgonio and whitney and it made all the difference in the world. perhaps a change of socks also, and i dont use them but i noticed a lot of people using trekking poles also.

good luck and have fun, i actually want to go back up since it was the first hike i did in the series and i want to see how much ive improved since tackling the others.

I've hiked up one of the mountains in the Jame's Reserve in Idyllwyld. The trail was mostly cleared so all you'll need are some decent sneakers with some tread on them. However, it might be a bit muddy so dress appropriately;.

whatever you do...make sure you wear some good socks. Either some good coolmax socks or even better yet, so good wool hiking socks. Nothing is more annoying that foot pain and the most likely form is blisters.

if the terrain is really rocky, wear hiking boots...if the trails are really just dirt paths...sneakers are fine. My friend's and I debate about this alot. A friend of mine likes to "pack light" and insists that sneakers are fine...but then always complains when he rolls his ankle, steps on an ornery rock, or gets his feet wet.

Oh yeah...and drink/bring LOTS of water. I would say a liter is the absolute minimum...closer to 2 would be better. At that altitude and direct sunlight, you'll likely need 2 liters minimum or you'll feel like crap at the end of the hike.

I have lots of pics from when I went in 2007:

Cool pics man. I've been up there before but never done much hiking up there.

I have two decent sized canisters I'm going to fill with water 16oz in one and 24oz in the other. I'm also bringing along a bag of granola and a small bag of trail mix. My friend is bringing sandwiches so I figure we can split the food during our hike.
