Hi folks,

I'm hoping for some advice that'll quash my fears.

I have an HIS ICE2 X850XT PE. My PC is running stock speeds, on all components and I've made only one change to any drivers over the last 6 weeks and that was moving up to catalyst 5.11. (and subsequently 5.11b a couple of days ago)

I'm not sure when but a few days / week or two ago, my PC had graphic corruption on startup (at BIOS load prior to driver load and obviously before windows load). The corruption was in the form of a pixellated screen, entirely unreadable. If I CTRL/ALT/DEL at this point it rebooted correcly and all was OK. Everything ran normally from then on, including extended hours on graphically intensive games.

Last night however I heard a high pitched whine, and not long after the PC locked up. I thought it was originally my X-Fi card so i removed it and the software and started up. a few mins in windows and it froze again. So I uninstalled the drivers for the X850 and started in safe mode. It all seemed ok. cleaned up the reg and looked for any viruses / adware.

Reinstalled drivers for X850, started again and after 30 mins no freeze. Reinstalled X-Fi and drivers. clean reboot.

Played around on it for a while, then started up Need for speed most wanted, 20 mins in.. the whine starts again (sounds like that high pitched electronic whine) then after a couple of mins the PC freezes again.

Do you guys have any ideas ( I suspect my X850 may be on the way out but I hope not!!! )

Is there any way that i can diagnose the card / log stats from it that'll show it's at fault ?

Kind regards

That's a big help , thank you.

I thought that the highly technical community would relish the opportunity to contribute and give benefit of their knowledge experience as I presumed it wouldn't be a straighforward answer.

thanks for taking the time to respond.
