Is there anyone else other than me who sees the great potential of the Highlander franchise, but also the horrible execution of that great concept?

The first movie was great, and set up an awesome concept, fictional universe, etc... But was followed by such utter garbage it's unbelievable.

More than anything else, I think this series deserves a top knotch re-boot?

Thoughts? Agree/Disagree?

The TV series got good once they hit their stride, with watchers, hunters, and ancients like Methos. Adrian Paul was also much more believable in seasons 2-on since he apparently spent more time on the martial arts training.

But yes, the first movie was the only great one, the others just had a few good moments.

How can it have great potential when it is all based on the concept "in the end, there can be only one" and at the end of the movie there is only one???

Sorta screws up the basis of a sequel.

^ yeah, they did have to ignore the movie ending for the TV show. A reboot movie would have to stop before the final duel.

I said a while back I'd like to see a quality remake of the first movie.

The Alien franchise after Aliens is pretty much the same for me. I can't even watch Alien 3 anymore because I get so pissed about how they screwed up the franchise.

so follow another immortal instead of Connor or Duncan?

we never know how or why they became immortal, or who made them immortal, right? so follow that line instead.

Huh? Aliens 3 is good, just really depressing. Cuz, ya know, everybody dies. Resurrection was just stupid, though.

I was thinking the same thing, but I'd rather see a reinvention than a remake. The first movie on its own was too spotty and its sequels were abominations in comparison, and then of course there was the TV series...

What I'd really like to see is a better exploration of what a several thousand year old person permanently in peak physical condition would really be like - lets face it, they were all slow and clumsy compared to what they really should have been like, and with several thousand years to learn and explore they should be insanely smart and knowledgeable, something that wasn't emphasized all too well previously.

Yea even though it's no where near as good as the first two, 3 is still a decent movie.

Conner was smart and in great physical condition. Duncan had some sweet moves on him.

The highlander quest for vengence or whatever anime wasn't terrible. But I agree - a potentially great franchise that has been let down by the quality of some of it's movies.

Great idea. And what would a several thousand year old person's memory be like? Would they remember close friends, comrades and loved ones from thousands of years ago, or would that all be forgotten and other than a few fuzzy but strong memories of some specific incidents, would that all be forgotten and they only remember the last 20 years or so vividly?

Like we don't really remember the friends we had as young kids other than names, faces, and maybe a few specific incidents.

Well some people have great memory and some people don't. I'm sure it's the same with them cus they are the same as us just immortal. They die from all the regular stuff we do and diseases. I'm sure they could remember stuff from hundreds of years ago. Conner did.

ahhhh highlander. i thought they did a terrific job with the tv series as well as the movie (must remember when the movie was actually made) I do wonder how things would turn out now with the advances in CGI and special effects today. But I have to say, I prefer the movies and tv series just the way they are. Unfortunately the concept of following another immortal aside from duncan or connor was done already and it didn't turn out too well, I watched anyways because I loved Elizabeth Gracen's big boobies. :D

As to the question above about memories, if I remember correctly, Methos was able to remember the dark ages fairly well. :p

Then you might be interested in the movie "The Man From Earth". Zero action but it really has an intelligent exploration of what a man would be like/do if he lived for thousands of years.

Unless there are swords and beheadings involved...

Because it killed off Newt and Hicks right at the beginning making the entire effort in Aliens moot. Plus killing off Ripley, Hicks, and Newt killed any forward momentum in the franchise which led us to the execrable Resurrection.

Sounds like a better PvP MMO. Kill someone and take all their exp.

Ooooooh now your onto something. But the only way to take all the exp would be to behead them. otherwise no dice.

very much agree with the OP. First film was great for what it was, and the only salvageable thing after was the TV series.

I recently tried to watch the new "movie" based on the TV series. The same asshats in charge of Highlander II apparently got their hands on the franchise rights, b/c they did to the series exactly what they did to the story with Highlander II.

and they made it much much worse. Holy Hell is that a disastrous wreck of a very nice concept.
