Highest Phemon OC

NZ'er has a 9850 B3 clocked @ 3.3Ghz, I thought these things couldnt OC very well.

If 3.3Ghz is now obtainable on the Phemon, what is the clock for clock against Intel like.

I remimber when Anand 1st review the Phemon, it was rumored the best performance from these cpu's would be when they started clocking higher than 2.8ghz....

thoughts?

Intel can do 3.6 easy... AMD, 3.2 max (I can't speak for this 3.3 OC), and Intel is 20-30% faster at the same clock.

That was one of those misunderstandings of what exactly was being clocked upwards when clockspeeds increased.

It turned out that because the L3$ clockspeed is asynchronous to the cores clockspeed that it was a change in the L3$ clockspeed that was giving the false impressive of super-linear scaling and speedup.

ROFLROFL bill.

Since when did AMD designate phemons with QX in front? 😛

clock for clock comparison really depends on what apps you are running and how they are compiled/optimized
i'd say clock for clock there is maybe 10-15% advantage for intel
but it all depends, some things do run better on phenoms ...

Anand has a 3.3 OC in their SB750 article...

DUH! Pardon me, I'm an "old school" overclocker.........

If the IMC/L3 is overclocked high enough the Phenom does pretty well. If not, then it lags pretty far behind clock for clock.

Will be good if Anand can shed some light on myth or rumor during SB750 review that phenom does scale better in performance as clock speed of NB and Core increases , i.e by comparing a Phenom at 3.3ghz or higher clocked X4 to a equally clocked C2D. (For AMD's sake I hope it does scale better)

i say that with a high NB speed (2.4ghz) and a 3.0ghz plus core speed Phenom really takes off, memory tasks are much quicker. At 3.5ghz, geez it's not bad even if it is 10% slower compared to intel at same speed

20-30%, and Yorkies are even more.

X4 9950 at 3.5Ghz on sb600 on stock cooler

To confirm this...Anand also went 3.5 GHz on a 9950BE.

But Anandtech did it on sb750 with ACC on.

The clocks that I had posted were achieved on stock cooling and old sb600 south bridge.

In that forum guy was further able to push the clock speed to 3.6 Ghz , not bad at all !!!!
