Higher than 1920x1080?

I just wonder if people are specifically looking for monitors to play ABOVE those resolutions...

Extremely hardcore people are playing at that rez. Any monitor with rez higher than 1080 is going to be much more expensive. Anything you do will be higher rez. Nothing special about it except needing some more horsepower to be able to run those games.

Yeah, it really just comes down to if you can afford such monitors as well as the hardware to back them up.

You have a GTX 570 so that can probably handle those higher resolutions.

This. I just started a thread the other day in peripherals because I want to get a second 24" 1920x1200 but don't have the spare 250 or so 🙁

Yeah, I just read that thread. Really sucks that there's such a premium for jumping above 1080.

Yeah, given the higher cost of x1200 monitors over x1080 ones, it might almost make sense to get two x1080 monitors instead. Put them off to either side or something (can you even do that or do all three have to be the same resolution?)

You can get a i-INC 28" monitor that is 1920x1200 for around $260...

That is what I was using before the HP LD4200...

I've played at 1920x1200 on a 24" for years now and love it. I've considered moving to a 30" (what its that, 2560x1600??) but I'm not really sure I need it, nor do I want to keep up with the hardware to run at that res. Far too lazy for that anymore.

I'm using a 28" 1080p. Would I like a 2560x1600? Sure...but meh, these days everything is made with 1080 or less in mind.

With that said..I want to Eyeinfity 3 - 73" mitsus 😉

What games out today would you say really benefit from resolution HIGHER than 1920x1080 or 1920x1200?

Your question is weirdly worded, you may as well ask which film reels would REALLY benefit from being transferred to Blu-Ray instead of DVD; every movie will look better at a higher resolution/bit rate.

I think we need to work on dot pitch, or pixel density, or whatever they call it now in flat panel days. Might eliminate the need for higher than 4x AA.

The reason many of those 1920x1200 monitors are more expensive is because most 1920x1200 panels are IPS. Nearly all of the 1920x1080 market is TN, so of course they're going to be cheaper. The 1920x1200 market has largely been abandoned with the proliferation of super-cheap and big TN panels, which are all specced on 1920x1080.

I'm with reallyscrued - high pixel density and low dot pitch. My absolute maximum dot pitch anymore is a 24" at 1920x1200. I don't see how people can use these 28" 1920x1080p monitors for daily use on a computer. That's like having pixels so big you can handle them with chopsticks.

I used a 32" 1080p TV as a computer monitor for over a year. It worked just fine. Tended to sit a little further away than I would have with a regular computer monitor but it let me sit back and relax more.

I also like having a high pixel density. I have the AOC E2243FW which is 21.5" running at 1080p. That way not running AA doesn't look as bad.

I used a 32" 1080p TV for a monitor for a while as well back in my last apartment. But being at a desk, I was simply too close. And doing things like word processing, coding, and to a lesser extent graphics sucked due to the giant view of the pixels at that distance. Sitting further away -- especially for games -- helped to make most of the problem go away, though text still looked less than stellar compared to my 20" 1680x1050 at the time. Of course, I have yet to find ANY monitor that looks as good as that 20" but that's a different story (my ongoing quest is over in the Video Cards and Graphics section 😛 )

I'm moreso referencing people that buy the 26"-28" 1080p screens marketed as a standard computer monitor, then sit at normal computer viewing distances. It may work for them, but jeeze that gives me a headache.

In any case, each setup/situation is different and if it works for someone then have at it 🙂 For me, I'd like to get my hands on a U2710 but even after coupons it's still too damn expensive for my blood right now. Plus I"m hoping they upgrade it to a 2711 by the time I get around to buying it.

Wow. I came in here to post "Who the hell runs at 1920x1080" but consider me educated.

For what it's worth, I run at 2560x1600. I love the resolution and screen size however it really stresses video cards. For new games, I usually run them at 1920x1200 but whenever I can run something smoothly at 2560x1600 it is always a treat.

I've had a Dell 3007FWP (I think thats the acronym anyways) for a few years now and I couldn't dream of using a smaller monitor now.

Do you use multiple GPUs?

All of them!

I don't understand how people cannot understand the need for higher resolutions.

We had 2048x1536 back in the days of CRTs! How freaking long do we have to wait for resolutions to stop being held back?

A mere 1920x1080 being considered some kind of standard right now is downright embarrassing.
It's not progress, it's something that is worse than some CRTs 10 years ago!

The fact the home theatre market is going to be stuck with the tiny 1080p for a gajillion years to come thanx to Blu-Ray irritates me greatly, since it will no doubt cause the PC display market to continue to diddle around with shitty resolution displays for countless more years instead of giving us options to improve.
Console gaming makes it even worse, since most titles are designed for 720p, & no doubt the "next gen" will be an amazingly unimpressive 1080p, oh yay. D:

2048x1536 on an 800 lb CRT with eye-destroying 60 Hz refresh rate? No thanks.

I do agree that monitors need to go beyond 1920x1080 though. Right now it's still very, very expensive to get one higher than that. Hasn't really gone down much in the last few years.
