High winter heating question

Random and probably dumb question, but...when heating bills are high in the winter, is it mainly because of gas costs? Rather than electrical?

Reason I 'm asking is because I have a new gas stove. I haven't used it that much but was wondering how much it it has raised my bill this winter?

In terms of heating costs, as has been my experience, electric heat is by far the most expensive, if that's what you're asking.

Well my current winter bill is $50 electrical and $124 gas. Does this sound normal? I keep the house at around 67-68 when I'm home. I'm guessing I'm not using electric heat then.

I think my electric bill rises about 20%($25) in the winter bill because of the furnace blower. My gas goes from $25 to $150 on a cold month.

I dont know about a gas stove but surely it wouldnt use more than $10 per month.

I'm on gas heat.

during the winter, my gas cost is significantly higher than electric, especially around november/december when I'm doing my holiday baking.

it's a bit more balanced in the summer.

Not saying this is likely your problem, but I found that a hot water leak was causing my high gas bill. Ask your gas company for help getting an energy audit. Maybe your house has some nasty air leaks you didn't know about. To start looking on your own, try this site. Improving the efficiency of your home may turn out to be far easier and cost-effective than you think. Hope so!

I thought that too until I actually looked closer at my bill. Apparently (in my area) they dont up the cost of electricity they just add a lot of watt-hours to your bill that you didnt actually use.
Electric heat is actually very reasonable for me, but the fucking electric company is filled with evil greedy bastards.
I dont have a gas supply line in my apartment. Each room has a small electric heater built into the wall.
Also I found I can use the heat much less if I have my electric mattress pad warm up the bed before I turn in.
The other money saver is working nights. When I leave for work I turn everything off. During the day when I sleep I dont normally need the heat anyway and I certainly dont need the lights on. I replaced all my bulbs with flourescent ones a long time ago. That helps a lot.
