Recording balloons being broken, either by blade or bullet is what high-speed photography was made for.

That and watching the tires crumple on drag racers.

Those pictures are a testament to the unfathomable complexity of physics in our universe. The fact that the reactions to an event happens in real time boggles my mind. Almost as if the universe knew what had been coming and planned its "physics engine" accordingly.

Alright, I have a dumb question - what is so special about these photos? Couldn't I just position a video camera, start the camera recording before the event I was trying to capture, and then just splice out the frame of the video that captures the exact moment I wanted?

Unless the sampling period of the video camera was greater than the duration of the event I was trying to capture... hmmm....

Because the shutter speed is slower on video. 25 frames per seconds vs. 1/16000th (higher maybe?) of a second on a high speed camera. Hell, my Pro series Canon can shoot at 1/8000th of a second.
