High school jocks - Janitors, grocery baggers, mickey d's jobs?

It's in my experience that the "soft sports" (baseball, cross country, swimming, ect) yield more professionally oriented people than the more physical sports like football or basketball.

It's just in my experience that people in the "soft sports" view it as something to do on the side, while studies and ultimately a career after high school/college is the main objective.

This is nothing but a stereotype.
I was a 3 sport letterman in HS. Played in college. Played after college, and currently have a well paying job. I didn't take my studies too serious in HS (still kept a B average, otherwise my parents wouldn't let me drive). My first two years of college I didn't take serious either, and finally decided to buckle down, and graduated with 2 degrees.
You can stereotype any category of people, and jocks seem to be the easiest to pick on, because in some cases, they really don't care about anything but playing sports.

HS sports don't mean a whole lot unless you're exceptional. so if you suck at school and are just a decent player, you don't really have anything going for you.

If I am reading correctly, most of you are saying that only the exceptional cases do well?

No it means that unless you are an exceptional player, which the average school probably has 1 of each year, you have no excuse for being behind on your grades except your own lack of work ethic.

I take that back. He is fccking hilarious after a bit more reading.

i was about to infor you of this

its obviously all humor, and hilarious indeed. once your ead the current stuff, go to the archives...all funny as hell

Maddox is propably the funniest sh1t on net, right after BOFH.

I lettered in Wrestling, football team and tennis team.

Some of my friends were also jocks. All of us went on to college and successfully lives. Granted there are some guys that didn't do well. A guy who was on the football and wrestling team is now working at Clark (gas station) and has been in and out of jail for non payment of child support. only reason i know this he was dating my wife's sister and stole $400 from her.

In high school sports were something to keep me in shape and keep me busy. In college i found most athletes only cared for the sport. I remember reading about a football player that had NEVER been to class and was getting a B average. He got busted and had to take test to prove he knew the material. He passed the test but it was latter found out on test day he was in Florida with friends and NOT at the test. His degree was revoked and he didn't make it in the NFL. heck i dint think he could even read. i actually felt sorry for him.

Maddox just made a dumb blanket statement. it just makes me think he wanted to be a jock but was either to fat or weak to make it or had a crush on a girl that was dating the QB.

On average, jocks tend to come from slightly more affluent families (their parents can afford to put them in sports, for one thing). That means that more of them tend to go to college. They generally have above average social skills. They join frats. They join the Alumni association after graduation. They network themselves into great jobs. Even if they have otherwise poor educational skills, they can still get high-paying sales and/or management jobs based on their social skills and high confidence level, and the management and teamwork skills they learned in sports.

the association at odds here is: jocks = stoopider than non-jocks

Of the 15 or so senior guys in my class that played football, 9 were in NHS, one was salut, all have at least a BS/BA and several have grad school degrees as well - but I've lost touch with them and can't really tell you what professions they are in.

sports are just one non-academic activity in high school that someone might dedicate themselves to at the expense of their grades - that it is "sports" just makes it easier for others to take irrational, over generalized, uninformed pot shots at.

BOFH?

Bastard Operator From Hell

Read and be enlightened.

well. the top football prospect from my school, now going to iowa. happens to be insanely smart.

linebacker, 6'4, like 280. russian.

hmm yea, hes only in calc III. :Q

MIKE

a lot of good college players are morons though. take eli manning, for example -- he can hardly even read. and that linebacker on lsu had to take the act 4 times before he could even go to the school.

LoL TekDemon... going over old tests over and over is called studying. Most teachers post old tests/results for that reason.

Ah, but see, while the teachers post 2-3 years of backlogged tests, they usually recycle questions from the ones 4-6 years old for the ACTUAL test. That way nobody sees the questions that are going to make up the actual test but you get an "idea" of what the test is going to be like. Thus having a 20 year backlog vs the average student's 3, you get a huge advantage.

Yes it is still studying, but it's obviously a lot easier to nail an A when you had the EXACT SAME QUESTION in your practice exam.

You don't have to believe me if you don't want to, but that's the reality of it. Even one of my professors said the reason he gave out the old exams for practice was because the frats all keep back copies anyway =p Sadly, he still only gave us 2-3 years of backlogged exams =p probably because I don't think he cares quite enough to go invent completely new tests =p

i dont know if what you're talkinb about apply to any campuses. never have i heard of a fraternity inwhich only athletes are a member of..or even associated with... nor have i known any singular athlete to be a member of a fraternity.
further, most of the athletes are bs Communications/Kinesiology/Education majors... meaning no jobs after graduation and no pro draft. in fact, at my school, 95% of the big-time athletes (bball & football) are under 'Education - Community and Youth Studies'... not only that.. its a NON-certification track (which all but officially disqualifies the degree)... conveniently, this degree plan is under "Frozen" status for the general academe... ie its only allowed for athletes

and all that other stuff relating to old tests... sure some frats have test banks... lots of professors also make old tests available for studying purposes.
basically everything just stems from the assumption that athletes are members of fraternities, with access to huge test archives, do well in school, and pretty much have a secured future....

all of which are wholly untrue

Uhh...wholly untrue? Man, get over yourself. I specifically said I don't know about all Campuses but on my campus it's 100% true. No, NOT all the frats are sports frats, but there are two football frats in my school(each composed largely of players of specific positions...weird), and originally they were the same frat like 100 years ago, and apparently there was a disagreement that split the frats. Kinda funny that they're both made up of football players though.

And how do I know this is true? Cuz someone I knew joined the freakin' frat and I headed over there regularly Freshman year, and all the brothers were just his teammates. Sheesh. There's also a frat composed largely of swim team members, and of course the other football frat.

Out of curiosity, what school do you go to? I go to the University of Rochester, and I'm sure anybody else who goes there can attest to this too. If you're curious DKE and PsiYu(no I'm not gonna go type out the greek symbols) are the football frats there. No you don't HAVE to be on the football team to join, but the majority of the members are on the football team is all.

If you wanna believe that all jocks end up nowhere in life, go believe that, but a lot of them network themselves into good places too, so don't be surprised to find this out.

I was actually interviewed by a Jock who had attended Columbia University once...I only know he was a jock because we talked during the interview and he recalled how him and his jock friends used to make fun of the kids with pocket protectors. And where is he now? He's a powerful uber corporate lawyer...I say uber because he was the guy behind a huuuuugggeee merger. I'd say the companies but I don't really want to give away who this lawyer is =p But at any rate I can pretty much guarantee that you've heard of the merger. And judging from the location of his office and the lawfirm he's a partner in(located around Times Square) he's pretty well off.

I went to a party at PsiYu @ UofR once... definitely the most people I've EVER seen packed into a house of that size.

Some of the other frats could probably compete in terms of packedness back when we could still party...the college has gone psycho-nazi with a crackdown on frats, partying, and alcohol. All in all...not fun =(

Then again I haven't really been going to any parties for quite a while now so I guess not that big of a deal...still, I had some decent times at PsiYu and DKE myself in the past.

Some of our frats actually got booted off campus for hazing...although it was a pretty ugly incident(although not intentional...it involved some medication that a student had needed), but I still have a shirt from a party one of those frats threw in the past heh. Ah well...

Were you visiting someone at UofR, or did you attend school there? You don't go to RIT do you?

Nevermind, I clicked your avatar and saw your e-mail address...you DO go to RIT! Or at least you used to heh. You should get on the DC hub...(this message will self destruct soon)

And all the nerds are millionaires. Frankly its dumb to try and take so much meaning out of something as trivial as an extracurricular activity in highschool. I'm not even close to being the same person i was highschool.

Yep, I go to RIT... visited UofR about 2.5 years ago for a party... been back a few times, really nice campus

and I'm on the hub 😛

While it is true in many cases ... it has become a very broad stereotype. While playing many sports myself, I achieve very high grades and have a bright future ahead of me.

Another friend I went to school with was very good at hockey and football. He was one of the nicest guys I've known but people were still jealous of him because he was so talented. Did I mention he was smart too? He's at Harvard right now on a football scholarship.

I know of more 'jocks' from my school making it big than any of the 'nerds'....most of these guys/girls from the teams were in honors classes though at the same time.

During H/S the jocks definitely had better jobs.

Harvard doesn't give football scholarships
