My closest friends now are white and I'm white and I have friends off all races but it seems most hang out with their own race. I know plenty of people of different races and we are friends in class and in school. But outside of school I usually am with white boys like myself. In my school the majority has to be haspanic although I'm not really friends with any. Basically its the white people on the grass area, haspanic/black in cafeteria. I'm everywhere. Anyone else notice this? I hear my school isn't as segerated as most in my area.

Kickin it here in The Valley of Los Angeles.

I came from a small town w/ a very high percentage of native americans (highest percentage of any county in iowa) but I was friends w/ some of them, but the rest of the people were white...so I cant say that happened in my school...but then again...it was a small town :)

Same here. But I hang around with a multicultured group. Some white, italian, Indian, Sri lankan, jamaican, Phillipino and trinidad. :)

Our school is mostly filled with Phillipino students (I'd say about 40%), and the rest come in all shapes and colors. Doesn't really bother anyone, cause it's pretty normal here in Toronto. :)

In my high school, there was a very good mix of people from all backgrounds.. Poorer areas near-by, $500,000 houses up the street, and your average suburban middle class families around the corner.. White, black, yellow, red, green, or purple, we had everyone there. I knew lots of people from all over the area and hung out with different folks every weekend it seemed.

There were some cliques that were made up by race.. the walking Abercrombie catalog white kids, the wanna be gansta african american kids, the spiked hair asian kids, and the smart as all get out indian kids. I don't think it was too bad, mainly because I didn't give a sh!t who I hung out with and would go anywhere.

my hs was a magnet school. so it had percentiles based on the city's race profile. it was a melting pot of sorts. so i got to hang out with alot of different people, but since then after going to college i went back to hanging out with generally asians (i'm chinese BTW) but i still hangout with different races. it used to be so much more fun though in hs because we were a very huge group consisting of everything from jocks to nerds to grunge to punks. we had blacks, whites, latinos, and asians. we did make fun of each other racially...we did polish jokes, blondes jokes, azn jokes, black jokes...etc. but we knew we weren't doing it to hurt anyoe even though it is hurting someone out there.

i learned the most racial tolerance but noticed more Racist type incidents because of my friends (black and latino issues most of all)

It's funny, because I don't see any of the "segregation" (probably not the correct use of the term... but you get the point) in my kid's first grade class. And I've never seen a more racially diverse school.

I did a survey research term paper on this subject on USC dorm students for my SOCI class.
The results were very interesting. It's a lot like mpg's case (kind of)

Its always going to happen... no stopping it... people hang out with their friends, usually peoples friends have similar interests... im not going to hang out with retards that all they do is talk about smoking pot or getting drunk... its not for me... so i dont talk to them, its as simple as that....

i find that ppl are more separated by music, example i like electronic music so i was labeled a "raver" but im just a normal person; i also found that as you go up in years in highskool you get segregated by smartness i was in advanced level courses so i got to know mainly ppl in my classes as well as atheletes, no matter what sport just being in the skool at 5 or 6 at night it is easy to bond with someone while waiting for a ride (or trying to find one)
so all in all, i didnt experience or witness racism in highskool except when a boy in my class told me i was too pale to wear yellow.

*kat. <-- went to a really good highskool despite the crappy things that happened to her there.

The high school I went to for the last 2 years of high school was 92-3% white so there weren't too many groups to segregate into...

where i go it is mostly white kids. the black kids usually stick together and hang with some white kids. there are few asian and indian kids, so they dont really have enough to form a group. a lot of times wish i wasnt so isolated from the real world living in the mid-class suburbs.a lot of people are really stuck up here.

I just wrote an essay on this, its still in roughdraft stage...

Sadly, racism still exists in today?s culture in a form that is harder to notice. Clashing cultures and ignorant minds cause some people to give up the opportunity of meeting new people. Today?s students seem to stick merely with their ?click? or ?group?, avoiding the possibility of new relationships. Martin Luther King?s dream of rating a person by their individual soul instead of their skin tone fails to be fully existant in the beginning of the 21st century. My school years should not be a relevant source in this very broad topic, but should be a mere reflection of how the issue has touched me.
In elementary school there were very few racial differences; the school was mostly white. I never thought of a difference between blacks and whites, other than their skin tone. Middle school was a great change there was a lot of racial variety, yet everyone seemed to be extremely close. This could be because of the small enviroment, or the lack of ?groups?. In middle school there was no real ?click? or anything like that, which is another reason for more social interaction. Middle school was a great experience, and helped me to realize the minute difference between various races. High school is different?
As you well know, I currently attend Booker T. Washington. Booker T. is known as a racially ?mixed? school, however this is not all it is cut out to be. For example, if you take a class that is 50% black and 50% white and allow them to sit anywhere in the classroom you will find the two races to be quickly separated. Ignorance causes this group of people to separate and stay with their ?culture? and what they are used to. This problem is not only confined to the classrooms, sport activities, assemblies, buses, the cafeteria, dances, you name it and most likely there will be separation of races. I most definitely think schools should be integrated, but not in this manner. It is not up to the Administration to fix this crucial problem, but it is up to every single individual to help see this issue resolved. Thus, it will take time, just as slavery being abolished, and schools being integrated did; there is nothing wrong with hoping.

Students need to take the extra step and strike up conversation with someone they would usually ignore, trying there hardest to give every individual a chance. Stereotypes and closed cultures need to end. It is very sad that racism is still alive in today?s society. With this being said, it is more the reason for everyone to help get rid of it. To end racism in the workplace you must first stop its beginning, the younger children. If everyone would wake up one morning and ignore any racial barriers, and accept different cultures, the world would be a better place for everyone.
Sadly, racism still exists in today?s culture in a form that is harder to notice. Seeing racial separation is ignominious, considering that only ignorance is causing separation. This is a very hard topic to write about, and an even harder topic to fix, but with everyone?s support it can easily be overcome. Most people would say the topics I discussed as petty adolescence kicking in, but I know it is something deeper. Subtle racism is as bad as blatant racism.
