I've got a system running :

3 SCSI HD's
3 IDE Drives
2 SCSI CD Rom Drives
1 SCSI Burner
1 Internal Zip Drive

Every slot is occupied

6 case fans

Loads of USB devices and a HPLJ 4m

All the above is running off an ancient Antec 300 watt PS.

Like somebody said, it's all about quality.

Yes, I have the powmax, it is sitting in my closet right now, it came with a computershow 30$ case
It is a cheap cheap power supply, it is very light and I would not trust it to doing much. Do a google search and you will find some forum where alot of people were having big time problems with them. You would be better off with a good 250watt PS IMO.

Up until I bought my TT 480 watt I was using that same power supply. Just to give you an idea, i was running all the normal stuff, all OC'd as far as it would go with my old board, 2 hard drives, 2 disk drives, 6 fans and a cold cathode fan and it ran like a freakin champ!!!!!! so if you are thinking about it, believe Tom's Hardware and pick it up!!! highly reccomended!!! (I am referring to the HEC, I haven't used powmax)

:)

we use nothing but AGI power supplies at my work, and they are extremely stable and high quality.
I've only had a handfull die, out of hundreds sold. They come in all our nicer cases. We use the
300watt AGI's. Great, heavy power supply for the money. :)

I recently bought a Powmax 400w because it was cheap and a lot of people said it would work fine. Well, it did seem to work fine for the 3 days I had it in my system. However, it weighed less than one half as much as the 300w power supply that came with my case! I don't know the names of all the electrical components in a power supply, but everything in the Powmax was also much smaller than in the old 300w. Finally, the Powmax only has 4 connectors for hard drives. That is quite unacceptable on a 400w power supply and hints that it's not really meant to support the load that a 400w power supply usually supports. I ended up repairing my old 300w and selling the Powmax on eBay. I wouldn't recommend the Powmax brand to anyone.

Remember, when you're shopping for power supplies, weight usually = quality!

Geez, I was just on newegg and they are selling the powmax for 32$ or something like that......that PS is garbage, it came in a 30$ case at a compshow that I picked up.
Oh and to the people who are saying that you cant use 300watts anymore, what about all of those micro atx cases and 180-250 watt p4 3.06 ghz ready PS's in them, a coworker has a similar setup and his runs just fine off the 200 watt (sparkle I think)PS and he has a p4 2.4c in his (NON OCED THOUGH)

My new favorite buy site. Powmax 400 @ $13.45 shipped! The best decent, crappy PS made. I have made over 30 systems with this PS. I have blown four through carelessness, but all the ones over the past year run without a hitch. In my personal system is an Antech 430. I gave up on the Enermax 350 - not enough juice, even though it is a very good PS. Modern video cards need alot of power. Get the powmax if your on a budget. Get an Enermax, or Antech over 400 watts to run multiple HD's with later model video cards.

Umm doinmybest, I do not think that the cheap azz powmax can even put out what a 250 watt fspgroup PS can
This thing is as light as a pop can and if you look inside there is barely any parts in the thing. I dunno, I wont trust a powmax for much, that is why there is one sitting in my closet right now.

I have a powmax 400 powering my 2.4c overclocked to 3.24 rig. It undervolts quite a bit, but its running as stable as could be. hotter than a mofo though, so I did a little mod project. pics of the power supply mod over halfway down

That reminds me...

No offense intended, but in general (show me one that isn't) if a power supply has PCB standoffs stamped into the bottom like this, it is junk. I've observed this from many label-brands, over several years, seems more than coincidence.

show you one? ok, the one in the picture you blurred up.

you judge the quality of the psu based on if it has pcb standoffs stamped into it? I can't say much other than the PSU is working just fine for me.

Even though the type of stand-off used seems irrelevant to the quality of the power supply, I have observed this, fellt it should be mentioned. If you are happy with cheap power supplies that others, including myself, consider junk, then I am happy for you... you have saved a lot of money and can buy based on price.

A couple of things I've seen with similar PSU, is that they die after weeks to months, instead of a dozen years. They often kill motherboards. If the motherboard dies but the PSU still works, would you blame the correct part as faulty?

You modded yours. That's nice, but shouldn't be needed. Yours undervolts and ran hot.. is this not a clue that something is wrong? A decent power supply is a "transparent" part of a PC... once installed, you should NEVER have to think about it, beyond opening it and blowing the dust out every 3 or more years if needed, per environmental conditions. Can you put as much hi-spec componentry into your case as it'll hold and expect the power supply to still be adequate? That's a large issue, whether a power supply will accomodate the expansion of the system, whether you can throw a hard drive, 2nd video card, etc, into a system without even giving the power supply a second thought, not even bothering to check the voltage levels because you KNOW they're ok, that there's nothing possible to install into the case that will overload the power supply, with possible exception of extreme, power-hungry devices like peltiers. Otherwise, the power supply will have to be replaced later, meaning that cheap power supply was a complete waste, since you ended up having to buy a better one anyway and could've just bought the better power supply in the FIRST place, and saved yourself the cost of the first/junk power supply.

Yes, I can make an educated guess about the quality based on the PCB standoffs, if they're like those pictured. I can do so because I tear apart and test every PSU I can get my hands on, as well as repair them, and have a pile of 'em from past years. After seeing so many with none of decent quality having those stamped stand-offs, I'll continue to suggest that they're junk based on this, until I come upon one that isn't.

300w is enough for most systems if the power supply is of quality.

I have a $27 Fortron and it powers
2.4 oc to 3.4Ghz
9700 Pro
2 Seagate drives
cdrw/dvd
floppy
3 fans

All rails reported are right on. Closer than the Antec I had.

I have a powermax 400Watt and it SUCKS! Sometimes I can't open the computer and sometimes OS freezes.

So I brought a 250Watt Sparkle for $11 shipped and my computer is running fine now for couple of weeks.
It is powering 2 HD, dvd, cdrw, floppy, printer, scanner, gforce 4 ti4200.

It's all about quality, just like buying a subwoofer.
