In doing some research on some high powered raid systems, I was wondering what would be faster given the following machine and workload. I have heard reports that sas is actully slower that u320. What about the 3ware car is 12 independent channels better that the faster drives and a 2 channel scsi raid? What would guve me the best performance overall (queries per sec)? What about price/performance?

Machine

Dual Intel Xeon 5160
16GB DDR2 667 ( 8 x 2GB)
Supermicro X7DAE

Workload

MySQL MaxDB 7.6.00.27
Gentoo Linux

Possible Raid Cards

3ware 9590SE-12ML (SATA)
LSI Logic MegaRAID SAS 8408E (SAS)
LSI Logic MegaRAID SCSI 320-2X (Ultra 320)

Possible Hard Drives

what kind of RAID are you planning on running? I was building a big array a few months ago, the people at storagereview.com really helped me out. I asked about using SCSI, SAS, SATA and even Fibre, but in the end everyone reccommended a SATA raid.

However, there isnt really a single end-all solution. Depending on what Raid your running 0,1,0+1,5,6, etc... Let me know what you want and I might be able to help
