High pitched noises from computer!

I was wondering if you know what would cause high pitch noises coming out of my computer? Sometimes when I?m on a website or something and I?m scrolling up and down with my mouse there?s a high pitched noise that comes out as I?m scrolling. Also there's a high pitched noise that's constantly going sometimes too. It gets annoying. My old computer didnt do this. Do you know what the problem would be? Thanks.

...and I?m scrolling up and down with my mouse there?s a high pitched noise...
What mouse do you have? A lot of people experienced high pitch noises from their early version MS Exporer mice, but I don't know for certain. It also and most likely be a fan inside of your case.

just curious... what in a mouse would make noise?

That could be your monitor trying to tell you it can't handle the refresh rate and/or resolution you put it on. Try lowering one or both of them and see if that cures it.

Where is the sound coming from? Turn your speakers off? Does it still come out? If it does, then its the monitor thing. (Too high Refresh or Resolution), if it is from your speakers, then its the scrolling MSIE problem. Usually happens with onboard sound.

it doesn't come the speakers, it comes from the computer. So if its the monitor problem then the noise still comes from the computer and not the monitor?

it could be your fans. try taking them out and cleaning them. or while the computer is running, open the case and listen closely to see if you can pinpoint where tthe sound is coming from.

I had the same experience. Tried all sorts of things to isolate a constant extremely high pitch tone coming from my PC.

It never occurred to me that it might be my sound card - but it was. I had a Creative PCI512 Sound card. When I replaced that sound card the high pitch disappeared (installed a Seismic Edge card).

Try pulling your sound card to see if that's your problem.

Hope this helps!

A lot of people here on ATOT reported that their older optical MS Explorer mice made these sounds. I believe they said it was the optical sensor or something like that. I also believe it only happened on cordless mice of that type. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think it's my mouse though. i have an old Microsoft scroll mouse. Not optical or anything. I haven't had time yet, but i'm going to open up my computer and see whats up with the fans and sound card in a couple of days.

You'll have to systematically determine where the sound is coming from. Have someone operate the computer to make the sound happens, then put you head in your computer(care you don't get shocked) and find out where the sound originates. From there you can remove the part that makes th noise.

I could be using the scroll button on the mouse, the scroll bar in the browser, or the keyboard to scroll up and down in IE and it makes the noise...

I had the same problem (also occurred when I scrolled a page using Page Up/Down). The sound came from my Enlight 300W PS. I replaced it with a Sparkle and haven't had a problem since.

Maybe it was your sound card, but I actually found out the problem and you guys probably didnt even have to change out your sound card. In IE 6, maybe earlier version too, i dunno, but there is an option under TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS - ADVANCED - BROWSING - USE SMOOTH SCROLLING. I think that's on by default. Just make sure it's unchecked and off. I just did that and now no more noise in IE. Also the one coming out of my computer is from the power supply fan I think. Any way to fix that? Just clean it?

Do you have an Antec PSU? Mine has the same effect. They have a "special feature" that spins the fan faster when the system load is higher. Scrolling with the mouse causes a short but surprisingly significant jump in CPU, particularly if you have the smooth scrolling enabled. A peculiar thing about the scrolling/fan speed issue is that it happens most when using the scrollwheel. Using the arrows or thumb slider to scroll a window doesn't seem to have quite the same impact.
