High pitched noise emitted from my optical mice

I started hearing a ringing noise after I upgraded to my WD Raptor. At first, I'd thought it was because I'd been listening to too much loud music, but then I realized that it went away when I went to another room and came back when I sat down at the computer--but the noise wasn't coming from my case. It turned out to be my Logitech MX500. When I put the mouse up to my ear, I can hear a high pitched noise very plainly.

I can hear the noise on several of my other optical mice, but not as loud.

Uhm...are there any mice that don't do that? I really like my MX 500

It sounds like a ticking bomb. I would toss the mouse quick. It's a matter of time before the PSU explodes!

ahh your right, my mx510 has a small ringing noise too! but its in audiable less i have my ear on the mouse

Yea, so are both of my MX700s. I don't like them nearly as much as my MX500 though.

I use to hear the same background noise. turned out it was my wife yelling at me to get off the computer..turned music up louder noise went away.

hmm, i hear my mx510, but only when i put it up next to my ear... weird.

If I put the MX510 to my ear I can hear a very faint high pitched whine. Luckily, I use my hand and not my head to move it around.

Real mice squeak, so why should we be surprised.

I've written about this problem extensively. I have also complained to Logitech about it, who denied there was any problem. For details, please see my site covering all Logitech product bugs and flaws that I have experienced.

If you want the name and number of the manager at Logitech who told me there "is no such noise being emitted from these mice", let me know and I will provide it. I can't provide it on the site because I was threatened with legal action.

Update for those concerned about this problem:

Today I received my Logitech MX518, in hopes that our customer support calls and general social discussions of this matter would induce Logitech to address the problem: Sadly, I must report that the MX518 emits the exact same high pitch noise as all of Logitech's previous models.

Those hoping to "upgrade" to the MX518 to address this issue will be disappointed.

I have also updated my Logitech product flaws page to reflect the MX518 suffering from the same problem.

That being said, my $4 cheapo generic laser mouse does not squeek at all.

Noises like this are normally caused by a voltage boost circuit. It's called inductor sing, what happens is an inductor is being used to boost the voltage. This inductor is an iron core, with copper windings around it.

If you float the windings, and attach them to a paper cone, you have a speaker

What I can't figure out is why a mouse would need one...

That sucks. I was hoping the MX518 would eliminate the noise. Unfortunately, I don't like the way Microsoft mice feel.

I realized my cheap optical mice has been causing this ringing just today after a couple years of wondering what it was, it only happens when I move the mouse. Found out my daughter has noticed this as well with her cheap mouse.
