High pitched noise coming from CRT only at certain resolutions

I use a mitsubishi 2020u 22" CRT.... my windows desktop is at 1280X1024... i tried it at 1280X960... no problem... anything less and it makes this high pitched hissing sound.... this bothers me because when I play games.... sometimes i have to lower the resolution. I checked to make sure my refresh rate was 85hz at 1024X768 and still the hissing.

Anyone know what this might be?

Had the same problem before on a different monitor, not sure what the cause was, but changing my refresh rate made it go away, so you might want to try out some of the different ones and see what happens.

that's the thing though, I can't change refresh rates in games. I use 1280X1024 on my desktop with 85hz and its perfectly fine. When games start changing the res, that's when problems arise. I was just showing that it isn't only in games. At 1024X768 at 85hz i get the sound... at 1280X1024@85hz i dont

Use 120Hz at 1024x768.

this monitor cannot go above 85hz at any res for some reason... but even if i were to do 120hz and it worked.... how would i fix that in games?

loose laminate in the transformers. Harmless but annoying. changing refresh rates helps, as well as sound absobing material (think drapes) behind it.

Is it an older monitor? I had an older monitor that started doing that. Wanna know what I did? I put it in the basement and bought a flat panel.

There's nothing you can do about it.

If it can do 85 at 1280x1024 it can do 120 at 1024x768.

The video amplifier bandwidth determines the max but it sounds like your INF file has 85.

where do i change that? and how do i make it switch to that refresh rate when i go into games?

try running the game at the same resolution your monitor is normally running on, and make sure v-sync is turned off.

Try this little program. I use it on my daughters computer. The monitor's old and doesn't work at 1024x768 above 60hz. This keeps any games from going above that limit.

ah reforce. good stuff.

that program was a little too powerful for me. i set it to specs my monitor said it could do, but APPARENTLY they LIE. so i got a bunch of squiggly lines and had to put in another video card to reset the settings.
