High pitch whine from my intel i3 HD graphics

Hey..

I just made a new computer for my office. The cpu is an Intel i3 2130 (dual core, 3.4ghz)..

Everything went well with the build, installed win 7 ultimate.. still just normal computer sounds.. Then after installing drivers I got this high pitch whine.. sort of the same as the old CRT screens and TV's..

after a few hours of pulling my hair and messing about, I find that it is the intel HD 2000 graphics of my sandy bridge chip that is making this whine..

and ONLY when I have the drivers installed OR I stress the cpu. if I run prine 95, the whine stops..

I don't get it 🙁

Anyone have any ideas , do I just need to RMA the cpu?
The rest of the computer is a crucial M4 ssd, 4 GB kingston RAM, gigabyte H67 MB... 430 watts psu.. NO overcloking.. just very strange stuff..

Yupp.. It is very strange.. I've had a similig "problem" before with my old Radeon 5870.. but it made a whine while it was being loaded.. :S

But as soon as I remove the driver and reboot, the sound goes away..

I have also stopped the fan.. alle the fans, including the power supply fan, the 2 case fans and the cpu fan.. no change.. it is not a fan sound..

Are you sure it has nothing to do with other components rather than the CPU itself? It could very well be coil whine from the PSU itself. What PSU brand and model are you using?

i have a corsair 430 watts.. it's only running a ssd, MB, core i3 cpu, a WD green series 1tb disc and a DVD writer.. and not all at once.. and evertyhing is stock. I event ried downclocking the gpu with no effect..

but it is very strange that the sound is only there while idle.. and only with graphic drivers installed..

I have not tried with any other drivers..
I wish I had some proper equipment to record this for you guys.. I will see later if I can make something happen..

will do.. just made a video.. you can hear the sound.. and showing that the sound goes away with prime 95 running.. Will post the youtube video as soon as it is done.. but over a slow 3g connection.. it takes a while 😉

this drives me nuts.. I just cant see how it can be the motherboard, but I will try and use another one.. 😉

Its your power supply Im almost 100%. Also coil whine has nothing to do with the PS fan, so disabling it wouldn't help. I know that sound you have is a bad coil in your CX 430, had a similiar problem with an Antec power supply and I know that noise will drive you crazy. Also please read the reviews on NewEgg about your power supply everyone is reporting your same problem. Jus search whine on the reviews. RMA it and get a new one with better reviews and no coil whine complaints.

But it does not sound like it's coming from the PSU.. very strange. .but I will see what I can do the next couple of days.

been running prime95 in the background on just one core now for a few hours.. no whining, just "normal" computer sounds..

I guess the biggest question is why the noise is only under windows.. if it was the power supply, should it not be during bios as well? and also while the computer is under load? And also then there are no graphic drivers?

ok.. did the paper test..
stopped prime and the cpu is definately making this sound.. started prime again.. no sound..

go figure..

It has to be the VRMs. I notice these Ferrite coils seem to make more noise than the standard ones. I had an MSI with the "SFC" Super ferrite coils and it liked to whine under load. As long as its not extemely loud, I really wouldn't worry about it.

but it only whines while idlo.. not during load.. this is the strange part..

and if it was the VRM's.. why does it not whine with NO graphic drivers? 😀

Ok, I know your problem now!! Disable C-states and switch your power phases to "full on" if you can.

Ah, the marvels of CPU whine. I bought a Lenovo T410 that had this issue. After searching for hours and trying many unsatisfactory solutions (disabling all power saving features of a mobile CPU is not an acceptable workaround), I returned the computer for a refund. Apparently the issue can appear on some motherboard/CPU combinations but not on others and it depends on individual parts--i.e., if you have two identical systems, one could have the problem and one might be OK.

In the many forum posts I read about the issue, no-one was quite certain whether the whine came from the CPU itself or from the motherboard circuitry related to CPU power management, but the consensus seemed to be that the noise is caused by the rapid power switching of C-States on Intel CPUs... which is why disabling power management features can sometimes fix the problem.

I'd heard CPU whine was resolved with Sandy Bridge CPUs, so hopefully OP's case is an exception rather than a trend.

OP, if it really bugs you, I'd suggest you return the motherboard if possible (or the CPU if that doesn't fix it)... if you're like me you'll never be able to ignore the terrible noise once you know it's there.
