High Pitch Noise and Random Reboot

Hi all,

I've usually been able to troubleshoot all my computer/technology problems by searching the forum and google, however, this one has me stumped. I'm new to the community, so please enlighten me if I'm not following any forum rules properly.

I recently did a drastic upgrade on my desktop and I now encounter two problems which I am not sure if they are related or not. Actually, it's a brand new system, just with the old case, power supply, dvd-drive, and I'm using my old WD hard drive as a secondary.

Problem 1: High pitch noise. It sounds like it is coming from the graphics card. It is not constant, and is actually quite random from what I have been experiencing. However, once I was in photoshop and noticed that I could trigger this noise when hovering my mouse cursor over two different tool icons.

Problem 2: My PC would randomly reboot every once in a while. Maybe once every couple of days. I disabled automatic restart on system failure, and get the BSOD with code 0x0000003b.

System:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Asus P8Z68-V LE
Intel i5 - 2500 3.30GHz
16GB Corsair Vengeance LP - Blue
Sapphire Radeon HD6870 1GB GDDR5
Crucial M4 128GB (C
WD Caviar Black 600GB (D --- I think
WD 2500KS 300GB (G
Antec Truepower 650W Power Supply
Antec P183 Case

Please advise on some solutions and guidance.

I've updated the drivers for my graphics card from the sapphire website; no help.

http://arpeus.com/downloads/IMG_0236.JPG --- image of the BSOD
http://arpeus.com/downloads/MVI_0237_1.mp3 --- audio of the high pitch noise. @ 20 seconds, that sound is me stopping 1 of 2 fans for clarity.

Thanks!

If the high pitched noise is from the fan on your GPU or your CPU, the fan could be failing, but not completely dead, resulting in marginal cooling, which could cause your system to reboot.

Just a quick thought on reading your post. Hope it helps. 🙂

Since your motherboard has onboard graphics, i would remove your AMD graphics card and try using the onboard for a while. If it works fine that way, then you know the Video card is bad. I had some high pitched noises while testing an AMD HD 6950 on my system, but it was fine on my GTX 460 card.

Try the onboard to rule out a video card issue. 🙂

Regarding the BSOD - I'm thinking memory. Check the timings/voltage setting in the bios and maybe go back to 1 stick at a time.

As far as the whine noise - my thought would be possible coil whine. There may be a bios update at the Sapphire website that adjusts power configuration to address this.

I removed the graphics card and am using the onboard video, and I'm still hearing the screeching =/

Narrowed down to the mobo (CPU/RAM) area. Updating all the Asus drivers now.

Holy crapoli my computer blue screened while reading this. It was my fault though I know what I did wrong lol.

So I RMA'd the motherboard, and ASUS sent me a replacement.

I installed the new MOBO, and boom, same annoying sound (although not as often/intensive).

I called ASUS back, and they said the only thing they can do it replace this board again.

Do you guys think I should replace the board again or just keep C3/C6 disabled?

Coil whine is common and just pure bad luck that you got a board that whines. If you're still getting BSODs then I'd recommend running a memtest a few times to make sure it isn't the memory.

Bad luck or not. Replace the mobo anyway. It is a sign of a poor cap, which will fail sooner rather than later.

I would demand a refund from Asus, or ask them to give you a different model mobo.

I've had many people suggest that it could be the PSU. If this is the case, would the whine be coming form the MOBO or the PSU? Because the noise is definitely coming from the MOBO.

If the BSODs continue, look in c:\Windows\Minidump. They usually put a log file there that you can analyze using the Windows log file tools with the right symbol files.
