High-fives could mean detention for students in Va. school

VIENNA, Virginia (AP) -- A show of affection almost landed a teenage boy in detention.

Hugging was 13-year-old Hal Beaulieu's crime when he sat next to his girlfriend at lunch a few months ago and put his arm around her shoulder. He was let off with a warning, but the cost of a repeat offense could be detention.

A rule against physical contact at Kilmer Middle School, about 10 miles west of Washington, is so strict that students can be sent to the principal's office for hugging, holding hands or even high-fiving.

"I think hugging is a good thing," said Hal, a seventh-grader. "I put my arm around her. It was like for 15 seconds. I didn't think it would be a big deal."

Unlike some schools, which ban fighting or inappropriate touching, Kilmer Middle School bans all touching.

But that doesn't seem necessary to Hal and his parents. They've sent a letter asking the county school board to review the rule.

But at a school of 1,100 students that was meant to accommodate 850, school officials think touching can turn into a big deal. They've seen pokes lead to fights, gang signs in the form of handshakes and girls who are uncomfortable being hugged but embarrassed to say anything.

"You get into shades of gray," Kilmer Principal Deborah Hernandez said. "The kids say, 'If he can high-five, then I can do this.' "

Hernandez said the no-touching rule is meant to ensure that students are comfortable and that crowded hallways and lunchrooms stay safe. She said school officials are allowed to use their judgment in enforcing the rule. Typically, only repeat offenders are reprimanded.

ok that is just nuts. that is takeing it way to far. man i am glad they didnt have such stupid rules when i was in high school. i got hugs from most of my female friends. i would be suspended or expelled!

this is just nuts.

Maybe they should lock them in climate-controlled boxes?
Or maybe the Mark Twain method:
When a child turns 13, put him in a barrel, nail down the lid, and feed him through a knothole. When he turns 16, plug the knothole.

wow I would hate to be at one of these middle school dances hah.

hhahha or on one of the sports teams! oh man i bet its hard to practice for the wrestling team. can't touch other students!

All the students should rally together and hold hands. Let's see them keep their state funding after suspending all the students.

ohh i like this idea. that would be good.

here's the thing, he did it once knowing the policy and got off with a warning. so what does he do? he does it again, and likely a second offense can lead to detention but with the media involved he won't even get that.

the school has a no touching policy because "at a school of 1,100 students that was meant to accommodate 850, school officials think touching can turn into a big deal. They've seen pokes lead to fights, gang signs in the form of handshakes and girls who are uncomfortable being hugged but embarrassed to say anything."

some might see it as an extreme, but they have a pretty good explanation for their position.

Their school would break Hands Across America...

This is just an example of foolish policy adopted by people who have no business being in administration. Some touching can lead to fights, ergo we must ban all physical contact. That's a stupid leap of logic, and it's indefensible in terms of the "average, rational person" test.

Then again, it's middle school, so they probably shouldn't be allowed to touch. Or laugh. Or feel. Suspend them from ceilings in cages the second they step in the door and don't let them out until their parents show up to pick them up. If their parents don't show, catapult. Anyone talks up during the day, 10,000 volts rip through the cage. Children should be seen and not heard; middle schoolers should be neither.

if this is such an awful policy why aren't the parents, like you, in an uproar over it?

This will lead to kids walking around school a day doing the, "I'm not touching you, I'm not touching you, I'm not touching you" annoyance game.

Kids won't be able to punch, just shoot. 🙂

Next thing you know, they'll install the three sea shells in the bathroom and put up booths that say, "You are an incredibly sensitive student, who inspires joy-joy feelings in all those around you."
