I have an adaptec 2940 u2w and like to use the seagate 1181677 lwv that is u160 interface but 68pin .. are these drive backward compatible ? also whats the largest capacity that card can handle ? I'm assuming no limit... thanks

It'll work fine. 68-pin is the standard connector for all 'wide' drives - Ultra-Wide, Ultra2, Ultra160. No clue how big a drive that card will handle but I have one at work hooked up to a 180Gig Seagate. :)

I hope you are not going to use Windows 2000 software RAID5. It works but there are several pitfalls.

why not just add another hdd and have a 4 drive raid 5 array?you get the benefit of 18 more gb and improve your storage efficiency to 75%
software raid 5 does incur a big performance hit, but mostly during writes as the parity bit isn't needed during normal reads. read speeds are quite good even in a software system, with the read speed approaching raid 0.

course not, i got a adaptec aro 1130 64bit raid controller with 64mb cache.. adaptec provide no docs on capacity of these controllers... i'm thinking of getting 4 180 drives to get 540 gigs or spend 30,000 on a SAN array... think of this, i already have the controller, etc, i can get 4 180 drive for 8000 or less and build 4 of these 540 gig server or get 1 540 gb SAN array for the same price...

my original raid was 16mb, some guy posted a bin upgrade file to get it up to 256, 64 mb cache was like 150 bucks.. very expensive.. 256 was like 500 at the time i look at it.. damn it's expensive... ami & lsi makes great stufff hehehe...
