High-end Party Camera

To me a party camera offers decent low light performance in an inconspicuous package.

I am curious to the party formats and what pictures the OP has taken already.

Don't for one moment assume I'm a pro at it, cuz I'm not.

If I had to distil it, I just want a really nice P&S which would also be a talking point, and functionally as least compromised for the P&S role as possible - i.e. huge sensor, faultless automatic exposure, completely hassle-free everyday usage, focuses lightning fast, has a built-in flash that throws out as much light as possible while being completely pocketable and provokes comments as to how cool it all looks.

Which is of course a pipedream - so I'm simply looking for the best compromise.

Looks like mirror-less camera is your answer. Have you checked mirror-less offerings from Panasonic and Sony?

As I've said a couple of times before, I already have a NEX and it's not what I'm looking for. It looks just like any other camera for one thing, and the NEX-5 (for which I've bought all the generally available lenses for) is mostly collecting dust. It does come out occasionally enough to make it's existence somewhat justified, but if I'm replacing it with something like an E-PL, it will be to replace the NEX, and not in this role.

I think you can safely assume I'm not on one.

Although there are levels of crazy even by my standards. But once again, safe to say that as Elfenix alludes to, e.g. M8.2 levels = no probs. It's about the portability, snapshot performance in as you say low light - which is why I'm looking at large-sensor cameras - and projecting / having a certain image, which is why the X1 is attractive on many levels. One of the problems with the Fuji is that although as I said, I read less bad things about it than the Leica, it's also a relative behemoth compared to the X1, although not apparently quite as large as the Leica M's (which are really on the too-large side for me).

No budget = Leica.
Everyone knows this.
It cannot be denied.

the oly xz-1 is another compact with fast lens. looks bigger and tougher than the canon and faster than fuji. i wouldn't mind taking it to party.

I like my Samsung TL500. I think it has the same size sensor as your Canon, but the flip out display is a nice feature.
