I just read the newest mid/high end guide and the recommendation for the RAM for the high-end system was for OCZ PC-4000 2x1GB.

My MB has 4 memory slots. Instead of the 2x1GB PC-4000 suggested, wouldn't it be better for total performance (gaming and loading as mentioned in the guide) to use 4x512MB such as OCZ PC-3200 2-2-2-5?

depends on the motherboard. make sure your mobo support those speeds for that many sticks. i know my Gigabyte 7N400Pro2 board will only support 3 sticks at 400 and with a 4th stick it runs at 333.

GB sticks are not very advanced for overclocking yet. you can find a good pair if you want to dish out $300+, but i don't know your budget.

4x512MB will make you run at a 2T command rate instead of 1T, which sacrifices performance. Also, with 4 sticks of RAM, you won't have any room to upgrade later. RAM latencies really don't make that much of a difference anyways, so just go with 2x1GB of PC3200 value RAM.

Long story short, stay away from 4 sticks.

If you don't plan to overclock grab sticks with the lowest latency possible, without spending too much.

For stock, I'd grab OCZ Platinum 2-3-2-5 at DDR 400.
For overclocking, I'd grab G.Skill Extreme 3-4-4-8 at DDR 500.
