High End Card for a Shuttle SFF

I am just looking for some thoughts on what kind of card I should put in my new Shuttle (SN95G5). If I get the 6800 GT (which is what I am leaning towards), I will put an Arctic Silencer 5 on it so it will run quiet and *hopefully* help in exhausting air out of the case. I don't know so much about the x800 (other then it lags a little behind the GT in most titles), but I do know that it draws less power (a big plus with an SFF obviously), and I have heard that it runs significantly cooler. I don't know if I would get a Silencer for the x800, and if I didn't I would like to put my sound card into the the Shuttle as well, but I think that would just be too much. I know not that many people know or care about SFF's, but I am just looking for any input, and preferably no flamers. I have used both ATI and nVidia, and I really don't have a preference, just whatever works best for my situation.

One more thing, how much bigger is the 6800 GT compared to the x800? They will both fit, but I would like as much space as possible, still, space takes a back seat to performance.

go for the GT. it's much better then the x800 pro in performance. and for those who say taht the shuttle's psu cant handle the GT, their wrong. The shuttle 240W psu can handle an fx-53, a x800 xt, 2 raptors, and etc.

Are you by chance the same guy who reviewed the shuttle SN95G5 on newegg? Yeah, I am leaning on the GT, I had an x800 xt pe ordered, but I cancelled it this morning because the place called me and said it could be weeks or months before they get a shipment in, ATI would not tell them when they would give them some. If you do have a shuttle, what kind of ambient temps do you get having such a hot card in your system. Last question, DOES ANYONE KNOW IF AN ARCTIC SILENCER WOULD FIT IN A SHUTTLE OR ANY OTHER SFF (excluding aria, hornet, and the like)?

Do you use any special cooling? Or did you get a Leadtek or something like that? Sorry, I am just full of questions tonight. If you do have a Leadtek, how loud is the cooler, I don't mind noise, but I don't want something ridiculous, that is why I was thinking about a silencer, but I did not know if it would fit.

Absolutely positively not, it would be a 2 slot solution, and the AGP slot on slot on most SFF systems is closest to the side wall, meaning its a 1 slot solution, or nothing

nope its a BFG. My case is modded w/ windows that go stick out and extra 1/4 of an inch, gives me roughly 1/2 inch between the window and the Fan/HS.

I do not overclock though, only the stock BFG clock. I'll work on some pics.

Yep, did the same with the SN45G with ACHME 200w. Completely stock cooling and no case or other mods. It ran 431/1.1ghz solid and heat was never a factor even with a t-bre b@2.3ghz with the I.C.E.+Ceramique'

I feel like an idiot, I never noticed that the AGP was on the outside, lol. I really like those pics Rage, I was actually looking into something like that. I have been hearing all these things about the heatsink on the GT being unbelievably loud, but I am coming from a case with 7 fans in it, so I don't think anything will bother me. But yeah, post some pics whenever you feel like it, I would love to see them.

Actually, from what I can tell, the X800 pro has generally better performance, as seen here... http://graphics.tomshardware.c...ic/20041004/index.html yes I know it's toms, but this is one of few reviews I trust them on.... Considering their numbers aren't far off from anand etc.

I am new to these forums, and I don't want to be an a-hole. But I have to ask...what review were you reading? In almost every benchmark, the GT is ahead of the x800 PRO. On top of that, the price tag for the x800 pro is 50-70 bucks higher. I am pretty sure I am going to stick with the GT, the only reason I would go with the pro would be for thermal and power reasons, but that does not seem to be an issue from what others have posted.

No real issues is correct, and you are completely justified in questioning that review. The name Hom's Tardware wasn't coined for naught They often pooch reviews, have poor testing methodology, and allow personal bias to influence everything from their testing suite to choice of hardware used in testing. Honestly since UBERTom stopped being heavily involved the site has suffered massively IMO. He may be biased and/or on the take, but he knew his stuff more oft than not and made some great contributions to the enthusiasts community. That was then, this is now. </offtopic post>

Yeah, I don't really trust Tom's for anything, but even their review had the 6800 GT in the lead all across the board!!! I followed the link and read the review, I only saw a couple times where the x800 beat the 6800 when they were not CPU limited.

Both of these Video Card show nVidia and ATI bringing everything to the table. There's no wrong choice. Our nod would have to go to the eVGA 6800 GT for the technological advancements made by nVidia this generation, however for all around gaming the X800 Pro would be my choice.

The cards are very close (overall) in performance so it?s not going to make a big difference one way or the other. I still see the X800pro winning the majority of DX9 benches whereas the 6800GT is faster in OGL. The X800pro definitely is smaller and has less power consumption -- so if that is a priority that would be my choice. Hopefully a VIVO that modes to a XT.

and quieter since it uses 1 70mm fan vs. the two screamers on my GT.


GT evidently is'nt too long though..I definity thought that would be a factor in this case with molex connector and such a long card..

Not really, if you look, you will notice that this review was on 7/28/04, drivers would have nothing to do with it. Interesting, this is also a quote from xbit labs from an article 2 days later:

"Besides the possibility of turning it into a faster product, the RADEON X800 Pro offers effective anisotropic filtering and full-screen anti-aliasing algorithms, which often help it to surpass the GeForce 6800 GT in tests. However, this is still not enough for us to say that this GPU from ATI is overall better than its rival."

I could list a bunch of other sources, including anandtech, but I just don't feel like there is a point. I did find that article very interesting though, and it even made me reconsider, if only for a second. Still, the 6800 GT seems to be the card that leads in most benchmarks. Thank you guys for all the suggestions, if anyone finds any other sites that support the x800 pro being better, let me know, as I would be very interested.

My friend got a VIVO from the very first shipment to our area and it modded to an XT PE I wish I would of gotten that one and yes X800 Pro is so much quieter then GT its not even funny.

yeah, i thought about doing that, but i guess i just dont want to void the warranty by flashing the bios. besides, you will be hard pressed to find an x800 pro without VIVO for less then 450. the silence is tempting though...

Actually, I must put my foot in my mouth. Aside from some online shops that I would not trust to send me a toothbrush, I have found some good deals on the x800 pro and the x800 xt (non pe, but that is okay). Visiontek has a pro for 400, and an xt for 480, and they appear to be IN STOCK. I am kind of bummed because the x800 xt platinum edition I bought was not due in for awhile (they could not tell me when), so i cancelled it. An XT would actually be quite perfect - silent, not as much power draw, and damn fast!!!

I have the Asus version, which has a very cool bundle and is a solid card. I hear great things about the sapphire version as well, as far as OC'ing goes.
