high def televisions and explanations

Whats the difference in high definition televisions and high definition ready televisions?

Obviously the high def tv's have a high def tuner built in, but how does that help?

Either way, I still need to use a high def satellite receiver, right? Whats the bonus in buying a high def tv versus a high def capable tv?

I'm looking at 2 toshiba 57 inch models at sears.. one is high def and is 2099. The other is high def capable and is $1999.

Both will still need a high def satellite receiver though..

Correct, the built in HiDef decoder is for broadcast only.

you can get local hd channels off the air with the one that has the tuner built-in, just add an antenna. Both will still need a satellite receiver if you want to go with satellite.

ok. I dont get broadcast stations--just satellite, so the built in one would not be beneficial to me.

Nope, the tuner inside is only to pick up the HD signals sent out by local stations in your area. If you are always going to have cable or satellite, you don't need the tuner inside.

are you saying your area doesn't broadcast hd? or you simply don't have an antenna yet? 99 dollar difference seems small enough to take the reciever if u can put up an antenna.

I'd take the one with the tuner built in, as its only 100 bucks more. OTA hi def receivers usually cost more than that.

As others have said, the HD set has a tuner, the HD ready set does not.

If you live in a suburban area, there's an excellent chance you can get HD over the air for free using an antenna and the tv's tuner.


Antennaweb is a good resource to find broadcast stations near you.

Actually the built in reciever is for over the air digital television.
DTV is a standard that supports HDTV.
That depends on what your local stations are broadcasting.
may be 1080i, may be 480p
Who knows.......
Chances are the built in reciever is a first generation dct-100.

I would go to avs forums in the local reception forums and see what your broadcasters are doing.
With a $100 radioshack antenna you might get some cool stuff thats not on sattelite.

I pulled the plug and got a Mitsubishi 65 inch widescreen hdtv. Its the WS-65413 model, silver plus edition.

Local brandsmart had it for $2199 starting today, I asked for and got a 5% discount. I played a bit of xbox on it last night but its not calibrated yet.

It's a sweet TV. Pick up an AVIA calibration DVD, you won't regret it.
