It is absolutely worth it. If nothing more than the color alone.

A lot of people will miss this point. It is a very important one. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is not just an improvement of video resolution, it is also an improvement of color and of audio.

Yeh, moreso than anything else it was the color the popped at me. Especially in the very colorful fields and scenery in Last of the Samuri.

I need to re-rent Curse of the Golden Flower in Blu-Ray and see if my eyes explode with the insane colors that are in the movie.

*cough*
The 5th element
*cough*

Do you know if they only have the fixed up version? That would be a concern :)

I think that Netflix only has the first release. (hard to confirm with out the box-"TRUE HD" in gold stamp on the back, lower corner). although, I suppose your eyes could be a good judge.

I was in a Sony Style store over the holiday, and noticed that every copy of the 5th Element that they had in stock was the original crappy release (some 30 copies). This surprised me, as I've never seen them sold at BB, CC Fry's, or any other typical B&M or online store since the new one was released. Did Sony just absorb all those old copies?

BB had the original crap version and new version of Full Metal Jacket on HD-DVD right next to each other for the same price. They should at least mark it down so people know there's a difference. Unbelievable.

Hehe, I hate Sony. Except for the MDR-V6. Best thing they ever made. :)

hehe, probably true. I was killing time and it was the only electronics store at the mall (Stanford outdoor)...unless you count the BOSE store...

say what you will about them, they make some badass LCDs. even though everything in there is 25% markup.

it all depends on how much you spend IMO.

I have a PS3 so it was well worth it to me since I got a console. Blu Ray was just bonus.

I also have an HDDVD that I got for $98 with the 5 free movies, so that was also worth it.

Would I pay $200 for one, no. I notice the difference on most movies, some are much better, some dont' seem better at all. The biggest difference to me is sound quality.

It cracks me up when I read people saying they wouldn't pay $200 or $250 for a player. How much do you think the movies cost?

Unless you plan on getting a player on firesale, then doing nothing but renting, then you WILL pay to invest in high definition at this point. You're in front of the curve, and you pay to be there. So to me, the players have dropped to the point that their price is not a main factor. The cost of the movies has always been my first concern, and that's true more than ever now.

I already owned a nice Panasonic Blu-ray player, but when the Toshiba A2 came out for 100 bucks at Wal-mart, I couldn't pass it up. In the blink of an eye, I've got 5 movies (not the mail-in offer ones yet). Just like that, I've already spent more on the movies than the player. And I have barely started, and have been trying to avoid HD-DVD in favor of Blu-Ray whenever possible.

Just watched Pans Labyrinth on HD-DVD from Blockbuster. The plot was semi-decent and kinda predictable, but the photography looked fan-friggin-tastic. Definitely a movie that benefits from the HD treatment.

My theory is Sony started tanking when they got into the content game and let the content people dictate to the hardware people.
