High CPU temp, should i return it?

Hello. Before I go ahead and ask the question, take note that i never been on here before..i'm a newbie lol.

Okay, so i received my first laptop in the mail yesterday. The second I took it out of the box I places it on a couple books to let it breathe, making sure to not block anything. Everything works fine and dandy as far as i can tell. The only thing i'm wondering about is the CPU heat. The processor is AMD A10-4600M and is running at about 80-90 C even when i just turn it on. I think the max for this processor is 100. Is it bad to be running that close to the max? Could I be gradually be causing permanent damage and will it get worse over time? I really don't want to be in the middle of something ( I do digital art) and just have it overheat on me and shut off. I'm planning on getting a cooling pad, but I bought this laptop refurbished and If its a hardware problem I'm still on warranty.

Where are you seeing the 90?

If it is idling at 90C, take it back.

Personally, I would trust HWMonitor so I would know for sure what each core is running at. Do you get a temp reading in the bios?

Thought for sure this was going to be another Haswell thread!!!

Anyway, the temps seem a bit high. Maybe try it under load and see if the fans kick in and keep it from going even higher. A laptop cooler is a good idea, but in my experience, they dont really lower temps that much.

Is it bad enough to need to return it?

Does playing an MMORPG and having a few tabs open while charging it count as load? It was hitting high 90s-100C, which is the max i read on a site, but it didnt shut off. I have it on power save mode. I did have it on High performance to get the fans to go stronger, but that made it hotter for some reason.

AMD cpu's only have one sensor for all the cores, It will have a separate sensor for the socket which you'll be able to see if you click the Mainboard tab and select Temperature. It's worth noting that AMD's CPU temps are reported differently to Intel's

As far as I can see your temps are fine, night be worth a double check with another reputable accurate temp sensor program for peace of mind but I've always relied on Argus Monitor to tell me what's going on and it's always lined up with said accurate temp monitors.

Those temps look about right. CPU-Z is probably either reading the wrong sensor, or doesn't know how to read it.

I don't see a mainboard tab anywhere..:/

i don't see 90C anywhere on here so im liking argus best, but the two other programs both said 90 so >_< idk which to believe.

It's no surprise they would be wrong. I've had several AMD CPUs register at around 10-17C, which I know is wrong also. The best thing to do is feel around the sides and the bottom and feel the air coming out. If nothing feels hot then the sensor is obviosuly whacked.... at 90C that heat would have to go somewhere, and you would definitely feel it.
