so me and my roomate were thinking about getting some fireworks from indiana (we're in champaign/urbana)... but then i read shelton's website warning about possible confescation at the illinois border.... (i know i know i should have gotten them earlier... but i didn't)

so.... i'm thinking if we got fireworks, we should hide them. Her car is a Ford Explorer, anyone know of good hiding places?

1. Buy lots of KY.
2. Insert fireworks up rectum until hidden from view.
3. Hope to god they dont do a cavity search.

If you hide it they'll find it. They may even have canines sniffing your car for such contrabands. Not only will they take it away but they may even fine you for making the effort to hide your stash. You're better off watching the experts do it than getting yourself and your friend in trouble.

Since when is it legal to search a vehicle crossing the border from one state to another? Unless you're doing something ELSE illegal, I don't think they're able to stop you and search just because they want to see if you've got fireworks. Of course, the laws may say they can in Illinois, but if so, they're a breach of civil rights.

Yea whatever, they won't check. I've driven to Alabam from Georgia for the past 2 4ths and New Years (4 trips, not going this year) with no problems. It's just scare tactics, they don't have time to stop everyone crossing the borders.

Drove across, stopped at the first exit, bought the fireworks, turned around and drove right back across. There were lots of cars at the place all the times I went, doing the exact same thing.

I don't think that there's any way for them to legally search your car; just don't drive straight across the border after buying the fireworks.

Sometimes cruisers will watch the stores near the border and radio in people with out-of-state plates. Once you're back in your home state another cruiser will pull you over, and that's when they can search your car.

OKay I've went from champaign into indiana everytime and have never been stopped. Are you going past a customs booth or something that I just miss? Serioulsy, do they have up road side checks or something, otherwise the interstate is just one big piece of concrete in a line and doesn't work like the mexican border :D

Alot of people here in Minnesota used to go over to Wisconsin and get fireworks. Cops would grab a bunch of them coming back. They would have people watching the cars at the fireworks shacks for Minnesota plates. (undercover cops I would guess) and that would give the Minnesota cops probable cause to search the vehicle.

What do you plan on buying? Bottle Rockets or Huge ones? Because I know when we go from Ohio to Kentucky, we've never been searched. And we've bought huge fountains, nothing other than Whistlers though :)

What year Explorer? If it's anything but the newest model there is an access panel in the cargo area on the left side (as you're facing the front of the vehicle). You can lift the door out and maybe fit some stuff in there (there's not much room in there but it's worth a try. Other places to try might be:

1. Also in the cargo area, there are two panels on springs that sit against the rear seats (run your hand down the back of the rear seats and you can't miss them). If you lift them up you'll find some pieces to your tire jack. You may be able to fit some in there (long and flat work best--a few roman candles, etc.

2. Under the rear seat. That isn't a very good place, but it's better than nothing. I would put them in the back and then put other stuff in front of them.

There are other places (locked glovebox, up and under the dashboard near the pedals), but they're either to small to be meaningful or dangerous (fireworks + wires = bad combo). You're best off just putting them under the reat seat and hoping for the best. Keep in mind that the border patrol people will be looking for a certain type of person when deciding who to search. A couple of college kids are prime targets, so if you want to decrease your chances, dress nice, don't blare loud music, and be nice if you do get stopped.

I'm not advocating that you try it, but about the worst that would probably happen is they take them. It's not like you've got drugs or dead bodies in there.

Good luck! And if you do get them across, for God's sake be careful!

Edit: bozo1's probably right. If they nab anyone, it's probably watching for people drive in right off the interstate, buy fireworks, and drive right back on the interstate in the direction they came from. If you want to play it safe, find a stand in town, and go have lunch or something afterwards... THEN head back home.

damn just dont cross the border using roads. If you can, drive thru a farm that's on the border (all those midwest states are filled with damn farms), or take a road that doesn't get much traffic (ya don't see any cops setting up checkpoints on pedestrian footpaths, do ya?).

It helps if you dont wait till a few days before the 4th. They do watch when it gets this close. Next year plan ahead a bit, I went over a week ago, no worries.

Inside the Firestone tires :D You can find some way to stuff them into a peanut butter jar. Dogs can't smell through peanut butter or coffee. What you do is take a new jar of peanut butter, and scrape out all the peanut butter in the middle so there is a thin amount on the side. Then line that with wax paper and put your fireworks there. If all else fails you can ask some old lady to drive the car and tell the cops it's your mom. They never search the old lady's car.

The PB jar, you can only fit M80s in that thing. I suggest that you don't put them anymore near heat. The spare tire is the best alternative, I'd go with that.

<< wrap them up tightly in plastic and hide them in the engine bay. >>

very very bad advice :Q

I'm in Ohio and they are illegal here but you can still buy them, just can't use them here. I bought a bunch in Indiana once and never had a prob but it also wasn't around the 4th.

wrap the fireworks with cocaine, and then wrap that with coffee, get a 240z and place all of the above in the firewell.

just haul ass like the dukes of hazzard through the country backroads..
