Hideous video playback problem

Having some issues with video files on my PC - when I open them in any player other than VLC the program freezes completely and makes it look like my system has crashed. Took me a while to realise that the system hadn't crashed, as when I press alt+F4 the media player in question closes after about 30 secs. Wierd thing is, I still get audio.

Anyone got any ideas whats going on here? I uninstalled all the dodgy codec packs I had downloaded, but to no avail..... HELP!

Yes. Although they're both using analogue converters at the moment for the monitors I have.

Try messing with the settings in vlc and windows media player. I had to disable overlay or something like that to get it to work because I had the same problems.
