Hideable distributed computing projects?

Since there dosent seem to be any way to fully hide Seti, is there any distributed computing project that is? That requiers no user input after install, that dosent bug you if it cant find the internet, etc? If you read my previous post, you can see why I need to hide it. Any ideas?

RC5 can be installed as an OS service (Win98 or NT) and is completely invisible to the average user...In Win98, the only way to kill it is to uninstall it and then reboot. The only setup you would have to enter (1 time only) is the e-mail address of the client to use and any network firewall parameters that you would need to get onto the net. Russ has pre-configured RC5 disks available for download:Check here...You need the one that installs as a SERVICE!

You should be able to hide SETI if you install it as a service. Talk to Office Boy about that.

Engineer, you can kill the client in Win9x, even as a service, if you use the command line option. At a command prompt in the client folder, type dnetc -shutdown and it will stop.

Rather than kill it, you might want to do dnetc -pause.

To restart, dnetc -unpause.

No, I *think* Office Boy meant the easy fix won't work anymore. I believe SETI should still run hidden if you install it as a service.

Yes, you are correct...I forgot...But you would still have to enter that instruction in...No simple clicks on icons to shut the client down..Thanks DRGrim for the compliment

In the interest of making ICONS to do what command prompts do, you can easily right-click on the DNETC.EXE file, choose "create shortcut" and then edit the shortcut's properties to include "-shutdown" or "-pause" or "-unpause" as you wish. Rename the shortcut icon accordingly. I generally do it for my "non-command-prompt-literate" assimilations.

Sorry to say I know of no way to instll seti as a stable service under win9x....

I answered in your other thread. I don't know if it'll be much help.

BTW I don't know why but /h has never worked for me, not even with v2.4. However I'm running client v3.0, setiQ & setispy on my sister's computer and the only thing showing is setispy which could easily be hidden using trayer.

Something you might want to try would be to use v3.0 and SetiDriver. When SetiDriver launches it starts the client and can hide it. SetiDriver can also hide itself and you'll have some wu's cached to boot. However seti will still show up with a ctrl+alt+delete. I'm sure there's a way around this or at least to disguise what it actually is.

Actually, I might have a solution. Although I have the install file, I've never used the program. Anyway, I put HideIt up here and you can try it out. It's supposedly a freeware program that will hide programs running on your system.

Sukhoi, do you know how to hide Hideit itself? That seems pretty obvious to me, having Hideit on the desktop. It even says what windows are being hid if you right click on it, so it wouldnt work in my situation. Thanks.

What about using SetiLog and the command line version of SETI? I do this at work on a bunch of machines because I don't want the users playing with the client. The only way to tell SETI is running is to ctrl-alt-del and look.

The way it works is you put SetiLog in the same directory as the CL seti exe file. There's a few switches but the ones I use are /s to rename the .exe to seti.exe and /h to hide it. You can also use a -proxy to point the client to a SetiQ proxy or whatever. PM me if you want more info!

At least he stayed with TA on the rc5 team. I've got 4 "cows" for the Seti_rc5 team too.

Still, I just thought SetiLog was more widely used with the CL version to hide it? Are there other ways?

It's not all that hard to hide the client. I don't know why DRGrim was having so much trouble. Oh well.

It should be installable as a service (dnetc.exe can be installed as a service in win9x as well as winNT/2k)
I just have been to lazy to find out what the needed .reg entries would be...

Sorry Robor, I was sleeping SetiLog just gave me an error when trying to use it I don't just want to hide the DOS box, I want to make it totally, 100% invisible to the user. That includes an obvious name like SETI in the task manager. Thanks for all your help

Well, to change what appears in the task manager, you simply have to change the name of the executable. Make it anything you want and that is what appears in task manager...

I know, but with every program I try, something is not right. With SetiHide, it un-hides every time you reboot, with most others the hiding program has to be open and in the task bar. With every hiding program, there is something wrong with it. So, untill someone figures out how to run Seti as a service, i'm runnning RC5. Sorry
