hidden gem of E3: civilization 4 preview

Hi all,

since I, like most of you, can't get into E3 I was reading through a few articles and I spotted this: civ4 preview and screens

I don't know how many civ fanatics we have, but I've loved this game since civilization 1. Oh, the hours I spent trying to fullfill the megalomanic in me 🙂

Pickup the new edition of PCGAMER. has like a 3 page article on it and is on the cover. Looks pretty good. I havent really played civ 3 but i played back in the day of Civ 1. Oh i remember many a day siting in the computer lab at school killing the damn romans...

zulus rule.

I haven't heard many people talk about Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which is about to become the only game I ever buy the day it comes out.

In my opinion, that's one of the hidden gems of E3, seeing as it's a PC RPG during a year where E3 was all about what the consoles are doing.

errr i believe that is also a console game. one of the "Features" of the xbox360. I hate when xbox puts games that arnt xbox exclusive in there feature game titles. Why does adding that make us want to buy an axbox when we can get on another system.

Ha ha ha Sid meier is my god I absolutely Love the civ games. Civ 1 was i think the 3rd game I ever played after where in the world is carmen sandiego and simcity. I was 9, and my friend taught me how to play, except he had no clue how to play since he was 9 too. He didn't know to fortify stuff, change his science, or really anything. All he would do is build tons of militia (which we pronounced mill-a-tee-ah) and just have them walk around attacking anything they met and since it was chieftain do pretty good. I think a little later when I got the game i was like "what the hell there' got to be more to this" and read the manual. I think I've played more than any other games, at least as whole.

I would like to see an alpha centauri 2, or a combo of some kind. The ability to design your own units in Alpha Centauri was a really cool part of the game. I also really enjoyed the story in AC and the future techs they picked, and I thought some of the late game secret projects were really cool--the clinical immortality (cities gain pop every turn) and others were pretty interesting.

Civ 3 is great too, but in later ages when you had 20984 units to move it is pretty annoying at times. And too often you would have almost no resources just from bad luck--yeah it's the way the real world works, but at the games start, before good trade networks are up if you didn't have certain things you were just screwed, with no way to get it from elsewhere than your neighbor bent on dominating you. I found that in most games I played I was either clearly way behind and was not willing to keep going by a certain point in the game or I was clearly so far ahead I would in some way win. Early in the game I was always forced into a war with another civ, and if I won and took their territory, then basically I win the game, if not then basically I lost, so really everything after that was superflous. Guess I shoulda played on a bigger map with more civs or something. Better civ players would probably keep trying if way behind or fix the resource issue of course.

It would have been really cool to reach modern times with the game in the balance--I did manage this once, and saved the game so I could start a brutal nuclear war. I didn't know that they were serious in civ3 when they say they'll use their nuclear weapons--it was a war everyone lost to be sured. All in all a fabulous game. Guess this kinda got long.......

Alpha Centauri was (is) a fantastic game, especially with the Alien Crossfire expansion! I was disappointed with Civ 3 at first because I was accustomed to playing AC.

Sweet looks good. I've played all the previous versions. Enjoyed Civ 2 best.

I loved Alpha Centauri, same generation as Civ 2.

Damn, I must have gone through that game nine or ten times. I'll have to start a new one, soon. Its too much fun.
