Recently did clean XP install. When I shut down using hibernate, it will alternate between shutting down perfectly or hanging on the "preparing to hibernate" screen. I've tried turning it off and rebooting and turning it on again. Always the same thing. it works, it doesn't work, it works, it doesn't work, etc.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I have had the same problem on a laptop I was working on at work. I ended up doing a clean install and if I remember correctly it worked for awhile then stopped working. It had something to do with the drivers that came on the CD we got with it. Once I installed the drivers it worked fine. Unfortunetly this was a couple of months ago and I don't remember exatcly what drivers(hardware) was causing the problem, but I want to say it was something that didn't seem obvious, like maybe the sound card or modem even. Sorry I can't be of more help. I guess my suggestion would be to check for all the latest drivers on everything.

Well i'm glad it's not just me. Drivers sound right. I have up to date everything except for the USR modem which has no updates available; the generic XP driver is working well with a few oddities. So that may be the culprit. Oh well...guess I'll live with it. Thanks for your input.

Hibernation has always been a problem on desktops and laptops. I disabled mine because when it came out of hibernation the screen was always corrupted. Just set it up to turn your monitor off in 15 minutes and your hard-drives after 30 minutes.:)
