Hiatal Hernia

I just got diagnosed with this a few days ago, Ive had heart burn problems and sometimes coughing gagging after I eat for over a year. I was given nexum to take but that stuff makes me sick. Pretty lame im 22 and im in good shape and I really eat pretty well most of the time now im going to be stuck on medication for awhile. Anyone else have a Hiatal Hernia or have any experience with it?

My former foster father has a hiatal hernia. He can't take Nexium; it makes him horribly sick for a couple days. I don't remember what he takes, Prilosec maybe?

I've had one since I was 14, quit being a baby!

Oh and take protonix, it beats the crap out of nexium.

I read this title three times before I saw something besides Hentai Hernia. I was getting some very strange mental images.

I was diagnosed with Paraesophageal Hiatal Hernia
with tortion a few years ago. Basically my stomach had gone fully above my diaphragm and was being twisted in on itself, slowly killing itself (and me). They had to cut me open from top of my rib cage to my sternum. I was 34 and my daughter was only 1.

My dad has this. He has been on meds which helps so much, but he was so miserable before. I remember for years he used to throw up 80% of the food he ate--no idea how he didn't die... but he's a tough old bastard.

I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia many years ago. I started drinking a quart of good buttermilk every day and I have been symptom free ever since.

I am not a medical doctor and cannot guarantee that this regimen will cure your ailment, but what do you have to lose? Nobody wants to get cut open.

buttermilk? I have drink regular milk all the time but that hasn't helped seems like a random cure.

There are a shit ton of PPIs to try out other than nexium. Theres prilosec, protonix, aciphex etc etc. Talk to your doctor and give them a try. If you find that its not helping, you might need a surgical procedure, especially if your HH is particularly big.

Go to a surgeon that does a lot of these and get a 24-hr pH study done and a swallow study. It'll examine your esphogeal motility and acid exposure to see if you would be a good candidate for a lap nissen.

Try Prevacid. Nexium gave my father, mother, and I all the same side-effects (nausea, abdominal cramping and pain, flatulence, rapid heart rate, feelings of dizzyness or weakness), but none of us had any problems with Prevacid.

Also follow the most recommended lifestyle mods for reflux disease:

- eat smaller meals and portions, don't stuff yourself
- don't eat anything four hours prior to bedtime
- avoid or substantially reduce caffeine at least six hours before bedtime
- avoid meals high in saturated/trans fats after lunch, especially greasy foods
- eat plenty of low-starch veggies, whole grains and other rich sources of fiber (e.g. beans), and drink plenty of water to keep things moving along and promote faster digestion/stomach emptying

here's something you can do to help. stand on top of a step or two, drink some of warm water/tea/coffee (whatever you prefer... but enough for your stomach to feel full of warm/hot liquid), then jump down to the floor and exhale REALLY hard as your feet hit the floor. it might help pull that hernia under the diaphragm.
