Being as this is P&N I guess I gotta say something political, so "I hate both the Democrats and Republicans for their nefarious ways". I hope that will do.

Now, down to the issues. I still have my job, such as it is, despite what the pubs and dems have done in trying to wrest it from my bleeding hands. They will never succeed. I pay my taxes, which is a political issue, and therefore have a right to bitch about how my money is spent. Now, I have no problem with how the govco spends my money because they don't listen to me and it doesn't make any differnce. So, I just kind of ignore it.

Anyways, my life is affected by political news just as much as yours are, but I can't bring myself to look up an http:/ to rile you up, much to my chagrin. I'm just a little guy getting by no matter who occupies the White House or controls Congress. Do you really believe, Dem or Rep they care about you?

I used to work for a multi national corporation and made good money, but the stress on my life was burdensome. I quit that job, took a position with a local business at less pay and find myself quite happy. I dont have the pressure of corporate life on my shoulders after hours now and can enjoy my family as I have never before had the pleasure to.

If you are asking yourselves, "What the fuck is he rambling on about?", I dont' blame you. It took me some time to understand and become enlightened.

It ain't easy to be an individual with no roots to a political ideal without regard to the welfare of others, but it isn't impossible.

Death to all those on Social Security sucking the life out of those who are worth more!

This is actually quite poignant, because I've found happiness in one's job is definitely underrated. Sometimes you lose sight of that for financial reasons. Especially when you have a family to attend to.

Death to all those on Social Security sucking the life out of those who are worth more!

This, not so much. If you're happy working for a small business, the only pension you may have access to besides your own saving is the SS kind. So it's important.

But that is my point, it doesn't matter if I get run over by a Dem or a Rep, I will be just as squished. Why would I care who anally rapes me, it's going to happen no matter what I do or believe.

I am not totally college educated like some of you smart guys, but I have a whole lot of years of life experience behind me. Does my experience make up, at least in part, for my lack of education?

Anyway, we all get screwed in the ass regardless of who we are or those we support. We all pay taxes to the same man and he doesn't give a rat's ass if you voted for him or not after he is in office. We all have a bill to pay and hopefully it won't fall on one segment of society more than any other.

Damn, this is fun!

W00t! Somebody gets it.

I have seen many advocating the aboltion of SS without thouoght of what those people paid into it or their sacrifices. I heartily endorse letting those who want to be be out of the system to be allowed to leave. They must give up not only their rights, but those of their children, should they become incapacitated. They would be entirely on their own.

Crown or Jack n Coke? :p

Seriously I'm happy for ya! The time I got out of 8 years of hell I was pretty happy too - I spent a month in bed because all the shit at work and had a nervous breakdown then I got a clue this was not for me because of free spirit nature I have. Today I do this and that and drop it like a hot potato if I get tired of it. I learned money does not mean anything and more comes in than ever, weird.

I for one would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

On retirement, remember that it is ideally designed to be a 3-legged stool. Private savings, Corporate pensions, and SS are those three legs. When all three are strong, the stool is steady, and you can stand on top of it quite easily. Worse comes to worst, and any good puppy can at least hide under it when it rains.

Someone who cares/understands.

I agree on the three legs ideally, but it doesn't alway work out that way. I am fortunate to be getting a union pension I earned over 25 years of service, and I paid for every penny of it many times. I will get SS and, once again, I paid for it for decades and believe I deserve what I was promised. As far as savings, if those were in the Market, well, that is money you and I are gambling.

For those of you who want to put an end to SS I would say think about it. If all else goes wrong at least you would have a few bucks to spend on food to feed yourselves.

I'm just saying.

I'm about to turn 50. I've paid into SS since I had my first job at 15. I'm still one of those that wants to see it abolished.

SS is a government pyramid scheme and always will be. It depends on more and more people contributing to the system and we all know that there will come a point where that's no longer sustainable. The costs of Iraq, Afghanistan, and the bailouts absolutely pale in comparison to the economic wrath that entitlement programs will eventually wreak upon us.

You may say that it is a pyramid scheme, but as initially designed, contributions were going towards government backed annuities, which were used to pay out benefits at a later date. Roosevelt himself was very well-versed in the insurance and annuities market. Heck, prior to the passage of the Social Security Act, this was one of the arguments being had. SS benefits aren't entitlements, they are earned benefits that are paid into. It didn't necesarily have to by a pyramid scheme if those annuities were properly invested and properly utilized, instead of the SS taxes going into the general fund. Yes, it is screwed up, but to label it as purely a pyramid scheme seems disingenuous.

It isn't a rule, even here, but is there a point to your post? At least I brought people out to discuss a subject. If you want to talk about my state of mind OT would be a better place.

It's my bedtime now, but I'll be back tomorrow to answer any questions you have.

I'm glad things are going well for you. Personally, I work 8-5 with an hour break, not a second more until things are really bad, I make decent money but not as much as I could if I worked more, and I wouldn't have it any other way. My cars are not new, I am in great health, and my family is great. Most mornings I wake up well before I have to because I look forward to the day.

As much as I say my job sucks, school sucks, and bitch about all the negatives I really have a lot going for me.

At 22, I am in a better position than a lot of my peers (being in college or not). I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but get paid fairly well for my age. On top of that, I get a lot of benefits from my work. In 4 months I am fully vested in my pension. We have 401k matching of $.50 on each dollar I invest (which used to be much better with an up to $1.50 on the dollar, but 2009 it's changing), which if I stay in my current job and only have a 1-2% raise/yr (unrealistic) I will still have 1/2 a mil at retirement. I only have to pay $150/mo for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, AD&D, and 5 extra PTO days. Speaking of PTO time, I get almost 6 weeks A YEAR of PTO time (at 22, with 2.5 years with the company). Oh I also get to do my internship here with a tier 5 data center, that is building brand new 14k sq ft data center, with 10G equipment, and many other things that will look great on a resume. On the subject of school, they pay for 2/3 of my yearly tuition of college (and don't care what degree I do).

My car is 4 years old, but I got it new. I have a gf who puts up with my caustic personality, and really does care about me and love me (for some reason). I am 1/2 way done with school, and should be able to graduate with <$10k in total debt (which is only student loans).

Politicians won't do anything to help me, nor do I expect them to. They will do what benefits them, and most of the time I will not be a part of that group. The government is not doing anything to help me keep my job, but you know what? Fuck them. I work for a company that is stable, and not in any danger of going under. My job is fairly stable, and while I do worry about losing my job it's not something that my department really does have to worry about currently.

So HP, this rounds on me.

Makes you wonder about the nature of happiness.

I'm a very low stress person, and I'm happy. The price of happiness is some measure of ignorance though, by the strictest definition of ignorance (meaning, someone who ignores. 'Ignorance' gets thrown around as a routine insult).

Peter Kreeft says there are two types of people on earth: The tender-minded and the tough-minded. The tender-minded care about happiness, the tough-minded about facts. Frankly, there are times when I prefer to be tender-minded. I don't see how you can be thoroughly tough-minded without going insane with cynicism and indecision. Life has too many contradictions in it for one to be soundly grounded in reality at all times.

That's my view on happiness. I rarely pay attention to news, and go about my daily business. I'm a happy person, but only because I ignore some things.

I think HP's salient point here is that as individuals, there is very impact we can have on politics, and as common men (and women), the political elite have little regard for us. Given all of that, we'd probably be happier individuals to simply ignore all of the day-to-day nonsense that we're so keen to bicker about here and merely live our lives. I tend to agree.

My only contention is that we elected those morons. We ought to at least attempt to exert some influence over their bumbling stupidity.

I think he must have just been listening to this song:

Here's a little song i wrote,
you might want to sing it note for note,
don't worry, be happy

in every life we have some trouble,
when you worry you make it double
don't worry, be happy

dont worry be happy now
dont worry be happy
dont worry be happy
dont worry be happy
dont worry be happy
aint got no place to lay your head,
somebody came and took your bed,
don't worry, be happy

the landlord say your rent is late,
he may have to litagate,
dont worry (small laugh) be happy,

look at me im happy,
don't worry, be happy

i give you my phone number,
when your worried, call me,
i make you happy

don't worry, be happy

aint got no cash, aint got no style,
aint got no gal to make you smile
but don't worry, be happy

cos when you worry, your face will frown,
and that will bring everybody down,
so don't worry, be happy

don't worry, be happy now...

don't worry, be happy
don't worry, be happy
don't worry, be happy
don't worry, be happy

now there this song i wrote
i hope you you learned it note for note
like good little children

dont worry be happy

listen to what i say
in your life expect some trouble
when you worry you make it double
dont worry be happy
be happy now

dont worry, be happy
dont worry, be happy
dont worry, be happy
dont worry, be happy
dont worry
dont worry be happy
don't worry, don't worry, don't do it,
be happy, put a smile on your face,
don't bring everybody down like this

don't worry, it will soon pass whatever it is,
don't worry, be happy,
i'm not worried

I'm just waiting for Moonbeam to show up and tell HP that his happiness is a facade and that he actually hates himself.

Fuck the naysayers. I'm happy too. It feels great.

Pay it forward...
