Hello guys, I dont know if its an actual problem or a technical hindrance... but here goes.

Setup:

nVIDIA 6600GT - PCIx
DELL FPW2005 20" LCD 1680 X 1050 - Using DVI plug
Windows XP PRO - SP2
1024 MB RAM

And I think that covers up all the important information.

Problem:

Any videos - including DVD's - appear 'jagged' when window is maximized. Good sized 'squares' are present, detail is blurry. The only way around that is keeping the window pretty small... which ain't cool at all. I have tried WMP, POWER DVD, VCL... I dont know if I'm missing a setting, but problem continued.

I thought that it could be the resolution of the LCD compared to the optimal resolution for DVD viewing (I dont know if I'm actually making sense). Hopefully you'll be able to point something out...

Thanks!

A good upscaling DVD player (I've never heard of one for a PC but I imagine that some DVD playback software might do it) can make DVD video look sharp and clear on a large, high resolution screen, but when you are just sending the basic 720x480 video to your LCD monitor, the monitor has to "magnify" the picture by 2.33 to make it fit the screen's resolution. This can result in the blurriness and 'squares' that you are seeing. Take a lower resolution (640x430) DVD and you're talking about 2.6X magnification of the image for even more pronounced artifacts.

For a simple example, take a good quality photo (i.e. from a good camera and not a $30 digicam or a camera phone) that is at 720x480 resolution or something similar that is comparable to the picture you'd get from a DVD, then expand it to full screen on your monitor and you'll see the same effects.

I was thinking about the same thing as you, fardringle. Then I see that he used PowerDVD and I have PowerDVD 6 Deluxe. I played DVD movies at 1920x1200 full screen with it, and the picture quality was pretty smooth. I see no rugged edges. So I thought it might be a driver problem...

XD 2405FPW, I have. Sh~~

Right on the money!

Hey! Dont generalize about cameraphones, my k750 delivers ;)

Anyways, thanks for the insight you all. Although I supposed what Fardringle said, nomagic gave me hope. Im downloading the latest drivers, the Forceware DVD Decoder and I'm wondering about Power DVD 6 since I'm using version 5.

Hopefully this can be resolved...

hm...I doubt it will let you capture it but can you see if any program will let you take a screenshot of what you are seeing? Maybe rip a section of the DVD and play it back via the file?
