So scratching an itch and since at one time I one a .45 Hi-Point Pistol I went to their site to see to check if they had anything new. Looks like the handguns are almost the same but now they have a 10mm carbine of all things. Are poor folks hunting with this pistol caliber rifle? A 10mm "Full House" load with the proper bullet could handle deer at out of a rifle. right? I mean 10mm Auto long arm is sort of overkill at for urban environments correct?

Assuming you mean for home defense, I don't think one would be overkill. With the correct frangible ammo it would be a valid choice, with maybe the exception of the smallish 10 round mags. 10mm is going to get a velocity boost coming out of that longer carbine barrel compared to that of a pistol. Of course, now we are back to the rifle vs pistol debate for defense. If you are giving up the size and portability of a pistol to go with a long gun, why not pick one that would do the job right better, like an AR in .223/5.56 with a 30-round magazine.

You could probably take deer out to 100 yards with one, but why? You can pick up any one of several decent bolt action rifles in actual deer calibers for similar money (I'm seeing it selling around $255 online) and do the job right. And you wouldn't be laughed at around the deer camp fire.

Those things sell well because they are inexpensive and fun to plink with at the range if you don't mind the looks. Same as everything else Hi-point makes. I guess it could be considered a jack-of-all-trades compromise kind of weapon. Fun at the range, valid for home defense, capable of taking a deer if necessary and you work within it's limitations.

In 10mm (they also make it in .380, 9mm, .40 and .45) it does a lot for not a lot of money.

The image of an ol' boy stalking thru the woods with a camo Hi-Point carbine makes me giggle. But real poor folks and, anyone else wanting one gun to truly do (almost) all, hunt with a 12 gauge pump shotgun. Boring, but still the ultimate utility firearm. Decent ones can be had for well under $200 which blows my mind. You can take deer with slugs, waterfowl, small game and it does double duty as home defense. I bought a Stevens 320 field 12 gauge at Walmart for something like $160 and love it for what it is. It's heavy, semi-ugly synthetic stock, made in China, but it does it's job.

How can you beat bang for the buck deals like these:

Maverick 88 Security/Field Combo 12 GA Mossberg - $179
SAS12 Semi-Auto 12 GA 26" Barrel 2-3 Rnd Mags - $159.99
HAWK 981 PUMP 12 GAUGE 28 INCH - $129.99

10mm is a great round, lots of range from light and to heavy thumpers. It isn't overkill for an urban environment with the right ammunition.

All handguns are under-powered. Making a 10mm into a carbine is not going to change that.

If the shtf, it's hard to beat a real familiar pistol on your hip and a carbine on a sling.

You may run into some restrictions deer hunting with a 10mm. Lots of folks would suggest more than a 223 for a clean kill.

While I see your point about shotguns, but I always preferred handguns and to some extent pistol caliber carbines. For one thing handgun ammo is much cheaper and in boxes of 50 rounds. And for another you can shoot the revolver and pistol with one hand vs two for shotguns.

I just think that it is neat that Hi-Point managed to came with a 10mm version of their carbines. I wonder ho much beefing up they had to with this design?
