Hi my name is Ross and I'm addicted to ... (no it's not pr0n)

Hmm....that is a pretty tough decision man. You are going to lose about 2 inches of viewable area. BUT you are going to save a whole lot of space.

If it was ME I would get the 15" LCD since it would be much more useful to me than the 19" CRT.

If you are looking to save space then get the 15", if space isn't a big concern then I would keep the 19".

I have used that particular LCD monitor, very nice, however it cannot reach the resolutions of your 19" monitor.

Send paypal to: webmaster@sbyers.com

Or if you just want to get the monitor anyway you can ship it to me and I'll keep it and evaluate you monthly on how it is performing 🙂

buy it ferengi... you cant resist this aquisition... buy buy buy... 😉

no rebate hassles like all those viewsonic ones from the past to worry about... comes with a dvi video card. what's not to like..

Why to buy:

The power consumption is only 8watts
Its an LCD screen!
It looks SEXAY!
Dam its thin
It'll impress all of your mates and future spouse SURELY!
Save space
Foot print is smaller

Why not to buy:

You lose 3" of viewable area
You will lose resolution and using 1024x768 is a lot different if you run 1280x1024 like I do with my 19". It will make editing and designing FAR more bothersome.
The res will decrease your efficiency if your use to bigger res then 1024x768.

Personally I couldn't handle anything with a res lower then 1280x1024 for my own useage for long periods of designing or surfing. Far too small for me.....

I'll convince you not to buy it for $7🙂

1. You will lose 3 inches of real estate -- very bad
2. Trinitrons are already flat, so there goes one of the man advantags of LCDs
3. Two words: native resolution
4. Unless you move your monitor all the time, weight does not matter.
5. Unless you live in small apartment, dimensions don't matter.
6. DVI is overrated
7. Its a hassle selling yoru monitor then buying a new one.

There you have it, a reason a dollar. I'll take MO. 🙂

save up for a 17.4 "

I have one of those Planar 17.4 with DVI it was $560 or there about, and it's worth it. Best computer part i ever got.

BTW has your post count gone up ALOT recently?

I thought we posted about the same, guess not.

Hopefully this will convince you - A 15" monitor is MUCH better than a 19" monitor because the extra 4" in a 19" is far too much space for your eyes to handle. Also if you buy it you're supporting the economy, even tho most of the money is going to go to the rich and only a few bucks for the poor class, if any. But for some people, money grows on trees and doesn't really have much of a value, so why not waste it? In that case, maybe the monitor is made for you and perfect for you're situation. So do I owe you $5 yet? 🙂

Remember all the debt you have?

The money is better applied there.

For just a tad over $300 you can pick up a pretty decent 19" CRT, LCD's are an unnecessary expense under your financial situation.

You know what you should do, you just have a hard time doing it.

You can keep the $5.

Dude, just think of all the stress you're putting on your back. That adds up over the years. You could end up with a serious medical problem, plus LCD's are so much better on your eyes, much more passive picture. Think of all the headaches you won't be having. Don't forget, the LCD uses lots less power and generates less heat than a CRT. Are you convinced yet?

Dude! You don't want to get rid of a 19" trinitron. Thats almost the ultimate in gaming goodness. Think refresh rates man! Plus you don't want to go down in screen size. Thats like trading your BMW for a Kia. It just doesn't happen! You don't want to be squinting at a small screen. 15" isn't even the equivalent of a 17" monitor, it's almost 3/4 of an inch diagonally that you're losing. Also I worked at Gateway and let me tell you those monitors are crap. Also, that video card is crap. How are you going to play JK2 on a POS video card? Why do you think they are only $299, you definitely get what you pay for there?

don't buy it..I agree w/ Rally1 unless itsa 17" or bigger forget the lil 15"...buy it to resell maybe...but to give up real estate(i.e. smaller viewing area) is not Ferengi 😱 😀

But I already bought it (just in case) shortly after creating this thread.

Argh, am I gonna suffer the Viper GTS buyer's remorse syndrome?

My main concern is losing the viewable area and I'm not sure how I'll take going from 1280x1024@85 to 1024x768 on an LCD.

Any more opinions?

<< I currently own a perfectly working Dell UltraScan P991 (FD Trinitron) 19" CRT monitor which is beautiful but it's HUGE in both it's weight and dimensions. I'll be able to get back the full retail price I paid for the monitor, so I won't really be out any $.

Here's the specs for the $299 Gateway 15" LCD and here's the Hot Deals thread.

Unfortunately shipping/handling is $24.20 making the final price $317.67 (after 2% off from eBates.com).

If you can both convince me to buy this LCD and NOT to buy it, then I'll PayPal you $5 (or USPS you $5 cash).

Thanks!

Ross,

You know how I love my LCD monitors, but really I don't think this is the monitor for you.

First of all, it's only a 15" model. If you were coming from a 17" CRT with a ~15" viewable area, then I would tell you to go for it. Even though an LCD is nice to look at, it sucks when you backtrack in monitor size.

A few questions for you: Do you have bad eyes? My eyes were getting worse and worse from looking at a CRT screen. Since I switched to my LCD, the eyestrain has been substantially reduced compared to my old CRT. This is due to the fact that LCD's don't really have a refresh rate because the backlight is always on.

Are you starved for desk space? One of the biggest features of an LCD is more useable desk space. I've noticed I can pile a lot more junk on my desk now that I don't have some big beloved patriot CRT hogging 1/2 of my desk. (the LCD is easier to take to LAN parties and such as well.)

Do you play games? I haven't looked at the specs for your particular monitor, but to play games you will require a combined rise/fall time (for pixel response) of less than ~45-55ms. Otherwise you will experience a ghosting effect when rapid screen changes come along.

All in all, I would personally wait for a smoking deal on a 17" LCD to come along, especially if you answered no to my first two questions.

If you have any more questions, just ask. 🙂

Would the following people please PM me their PayPal e-mail address so I can send them $5 for convincing me NOT to buy this LCD. Just cancelled my order, I feel both sad but relieved that you guys helped me come to my senses.

Please PM me your PayPal e-mail address, thanks!

I'll give you a cookie. If you get me one too, I'll give you a glass of curdled milk out of the 3 week old jug of milk I have. 😀

<< keep your money ($5) and start saving up for that 17" DVI LCD. >>

Thanks, will do.

BTW I was never aware of our post counts being similiar, I think I'm around 17 ppd?

Your on crack.

I used to buy stuff on hot deals ALL THE TIME.. I quit my job and STOPPED.

I realize now that I was just wasting my money on that stuff because I had nothing better to do.

Not that I have found anything better now.. but still 😀
