Lots of high tech computer companies auction off "old but new" stuff on eBay, think about the ease. The infrastructure is there already plus the eBay name is known worldwide so it's the perfect fit. My roommate purchased a Sun Sparc workstation for about $1,100 less than Sun.com's price because he bought a clearance on eBay.

These are last year's top of the line models, they are probably surplus ... People have noted the BIOS dates are pretty new.

Those of you lurking and wondering whether to jump on this deal or not, I say JUMP!

Rossman,

personally I think it's a weak idea. In this case, IBM already has a storefront (shop.ibm.com) that sells virtually all their known products (IBM is much more than a PC company). If you go there, you'll notice they carry their T21s at _significantly_ higher prices than the auction units. Now it may be great in the promotional sense to get _extra_ business on ebay, but I'd have to think from a business standpoint, they are sacrificing so much on price that profit is unlikely. IBM isn't known for being a low-cost, lean operation like Dell. ;)

My point is that if you already have your own storefront, what good reasons are there to blow-out NEW models on ebay? I'm sure they'd prefer to sell all their machines directly from their web site, at full cost. The only obvious strong reason that comes to mind is that since IBM is not build-to-order, they occasionally have inventory excesses that they need to quietly get rid of.

the point on ebay is that they are getting their name out as a great company. i doubt they lose money, besides they might be offloading slow selling inventory. the economy is in a downturn, and lots of companies have many months of inventory just rotting there, so rather than write off the depreciation as a loss at the end of the quarter, they can sell them and at least their gross revenues go up a little.

Didn't know the T runs hot. I got the A21p and it only feels warm to the touch even after 15 minutes of doing RC5 ;)

OK, I got my confirming email and called IBM and gave them my CC info.

I just got an email containing my order info - 128mb upgrade for my laptop. NOTHING WAS MENTIONED IN THE EMAIL ABOUT THE LAPTOP ITSELF !!!!

This is why I hate to deal with sales reps over the phone, they tend to screw things up and you can never contact them to get it straight.

Can you comment IBMAuctions.

Thanks

Just got another five!

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1250442104

Get 'em if you can.

As for the customer service question, please contact the number provided in the winning confirmation email, and the auction sales representatives are extremely helpful in terms of getting everything shipped, and helping out if there are any types of problems. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, though.

about to spring for one of these myself, i'd just like to make sure of some things.

the T series is the more lightweight model, correct? it also gets hotter?

i need something to take notes for lectures next year, i'd like the lightest possible. was looking at some Sony's and Toshiba's for 3lbs. but i think 5lbs. should be fine if that's how heavy the T series are. DVD is definitely a must :)

was holding out for something with a better vid card, but it would probably end up costing me $400+ more, something i'm not prepared to splurge one :) i'll just blow another $100 or so on memory and it would still be considerably cheaper.

i'll be doing presentations for next year- what's this problem i hear about it not being about to output to a screen and on the laptop display at the same time? if that's true that's something i'm going to have to definitely consider...

oh yea, and is the 10/100 ethernet port functional or cosmetic?

thanks :)

Ok, I got everything straight. :)

IBM sure has a wierd way of doing things.

First only the extra memory the sales rep talked me into showed up on my on-line invoice. I called and the sales rep said he didn't know why the laptop didn't show up. He couldn't see it on his end either. After checking, he said it was a proceedural thing and that it would show up shortly.

It did BUT priced at some $3800 and some change. I called again and the guy said that the warehouse adds it then the sales dept has to adjust the price.

Anyway, everything seems to be cool now. Doing business with Big Blue is an adventure. :)

Does anyone know anything about the extended warranty that was mentioned in an earlier post? Apparently when you use an American Express card, you get 5 years warranty instead of 3, and 2 years battery warranty instead of 1. Does this apply to AMEX Gold/Platinum too? or just 'Blue'?

Also, a great big BURN IN ETERNAL FLAMES OF HELLFIRE to those people buying up 4 or 5 units of the best deals!
Ah well, back to constantly hitting refresh in the hope that one of those PIII 700s with DVD for $1070 comes back up :-(

Are the only four differences between this T21 $1649 and the T20 for $1309:

1) T21 is P3/850 vs T20 P3/700
2) T21 is 32GB vs T20 12GB
3) T21 14.1" TFT LCD Display has higher resolution than T20 (not sure)
4) T21 only has 56k vs T20 has built in 56k modem/NIC (big advantage for T20)

So I'm trying to see if I can justify the $340 price difference.
