Actually, they don't suck that bad when they're running on schedule. Even my 14-hour ride from Denver to Illinois wasn't too bad when I didn't have to wait an extra four hours before the train got to the station..

Pics of the ticket showing that the train was supposed to leave yesterday and got delayed or it didn't happen...

For me? That's been over two months. It was scheduled to leave at 8:30 PM and it ended up out at 12:30 AM. Don't think I can do anything for you with pics. Didn't figure I'd need to prove it to the Internets.

The only time i've found train travel useful is in two places;

1. Europe
2. Going from Newark Airport (EWR) -> Manhattan

Otherwise, I'm taking a plane.

I was being sarcastic with the OP, but truthfully Amtrak is almost always insanely late:p

There was a point in my life where I used a train regularly to get places.
Mostly the LIE train and Amtrak from Buffalo to wherever in the state.

THe only way I could deal with being on the train was to drink, heavily.

If I were to take Amtrak home, which is from Savannah, Ga to Atlanta, Ga, it takes almost 24 hours, and I have to go to Washington DC, it also costs double what a plane costs. Fuck that.

Looked it up, round trip is $415 and 27 hours each way from Savannah to Atlanta.

He said the train was doing 140 so he has to be on the Acela Express.

You can do Penn Station NYC to Boston's South Station in 3.5 hours on it, which beats the headaches with flying out of NYC area and into Logan. It's cheaper too.

I was going to take the amtrak from cincy to chicago with the GF for a quick little weekend get-a-way. I priced the tickets, and even without the meal plan, it ws still $300 round trip, and it would take 11 hours one way. With the meal plan, as 11 hours without food is a bit much, it would be well over $450. I can drive there and back for about 100 bucks, and in 5 hours

Amtrak is pretty good here. We have service running from downtown San Diego to downtown Los Angeles many times each day including weekends. I think it takes about 2 hours or so by train but by car it can take much longer depending on traffic. My wife used to take the train from Oceanside to downtown L.A. 4 times a week for about a month.

We have a commuter train that runs up and down the coast on that same rail line called the Coaster too. It is widely used here.
