Hi def Tsunami Satellite Images

it's like a huge north shore wave pounds an entire country causing instant flooding... probably killing weak swimmers (children and elderly mostly) and making a huge mess of the entire coastline. wow.

Damn politicians, why dont they just install warning systems? 🙁

Money. And who saw this coming?! Hindsight is everything.

Scientists have known for some time an event like this would occur. Tsunamis after quakes are entirely predictable. This is just a case of being ill prepared.

They had 3 hours to warn people in vicinity of Indian Ocean.

Warning systems installed in Pacific coastal lines can detect tsunamis as small as 0.4 inches and can warn regions which will be affected by impending tsunamis. So yes, money is one factor but it is possible to detect them as they are always preceded by volcanic or activity related to strata of earth (for example, earth-quake).

I forgot how typical it is when major news stories break out people are all of sudden "experts" in the appriopiate field.

0.4 inches isn't a tsunami.

These people had other things to worry about, like civil wars, famine... etc. Since they never had a tsunami before, how can you convince someone something will happen when they are more worried about dying in a car bomb? It?s very easy to point fingers now.

0.4 inches isn't a tsunami.

"As the tsunami crosses the deep ocean, its length from crest to crest may be a hundred miles or more, and its height from crest to trough will only be a few feet or less. They can not be felt aboard ships nor can they be seen from the air in the open ocean. In the deepest oceans, the waves will reach speeds exceeding 600 miles per hour (970 km/hr). When the tsunami enters the shoaling water of coastlines in its path, the velocity of its waves diminishes and the wave height increases. It is in these shallow waters that a large tsunami can crest to heights exceeding 100 feet (30 m) and strike with devastating force"
