Our rather backward community is about to get a Costco and a hhgregg. I know about Costco but had never heard of hhgregg. Apparently it is similar to Best Buy/Circuit City. What say you folks who have one? Should I be excited about the deals that are about to come our way or just say "ho, hum" and go on about my business?

For any others who don't know about them, they are in Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and about to be some in Florida (Tallahassee, Jacksonville and Daytona Beach.)
 
We've had them around for a few years now, exciting at first but I don't think they're that great. IIRC, Commision sales staff, seem to be more appliance oriented than BB/CC.

Give them a chance, especially with opening sales, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Yep, and their prices aren't any different than BB or CC. We had one open here a couple of months ago...I hadn't heard of them before, either.

The store is smaller and seems to be a bit more cramped than BB or CC. Lots of TV's and appliances. Some audio stuff, a few cameras and almost zero computer stuff.

I never had heard of them either until that one on Capital in Raleigh opened. We went in there looking at TV's one day and got hounded relentlessly the entire time by sales people. You tell one "We're just looking" and they back off, but then the other five that are hovering will ask you next if you need something. I had this one particularly smarmy lady that kept doing walk-by's saying stuff like "Sure is a nice TV" and then two minutes later "Boy that would look good in your living room." Whenever we would move she would casually follow us from like 10 feet away. Everywhere we went in the store we turned around and she was there. Annoying.
 
Read good thibgs about them in the avforums although I've never been to one. Seems as if they are willing to negotiate on prices unlike bb\cc.
 
We've bought a plasma TV, and an HE washer/dryer from HHG, and a few small items. It's a viable alternative to the Best Buy monopoly, especially with Circuit City going down. I don't mind the commissioned sales people. In fact, some of their ineptness is entertaining.

They have a great TV wall setup, but I also hate their commissioned sales staff.

Can't I just browse myself without having some 40 year old virgin explaining to me the difference between plasma and LCD?
 
With our CompUSA closing and Circuit City circling the drain, I'm hoping to find that viable alternative to Best Buy. Hhgregg's computer accessory/computer section online seems very anemic
 
Long story short, I bought an extended warranty on a video camera 5 years ago and they stated that coke was spillled in it. I had the camera %100 of the time and know that it didnt get any liquid spilled in it. It was their word against mine, I didnt get the camera fixed. I would never shop there again, even though I dont live in Ohio anymore.

I do realize that this could have happened at CC or BB though.

I have one local, but haven't purchased anything from them. Their sale prices seem to be pretty decent though. I'd look at them as a viable alternative to the other big box stores, nothing more, nothing less.
 
They are quite strictly a high-dollar electronics and appliances store. More or less worthless to the casual shopper.
 
It's always good to have another choice, but I haven't found them to be any better than CC or BB. They do have a pretty large selection of TV's, but virtually no computer stuff and pretty limited audio. I haven't shopped for appliances there, but the selection seems to be at least as large as BB.

They did have the best deal going on an HD DVD player on Black Friday. I got my Toshiba A3 for $150 when the next best price was Sears at $180 (or was it 170?).

But just like CC, they really aren't setup to deal with a large number of customers. They only had like 3 registers in the store and despite the fact that there were only about 10 people in front of me in line, I still waited almost an hour to check out. So I won't be going there again for BF next year.
 
They aren't bad. I bought my new stove from them earlier this year, and my daughter and her fiance' bought a 50" plasma from them on BF for half price ($1500 for a $3000 unit). Only problem I have with them are they are in the next county over, so sales tax is higher than in my county. And their delivery prices from B&M are kind of high, but if you get a good sale, it makes up for it compared to BB and CC.
 
I've only bought one thing from them, my HD TV. It was black friday and Best Buy had a great deal on this TV. I know I didn't want to wait in line there. So, I took their ad and went to HHGregg that morning, instead. They priced matched it and I was out the door in no time.

We've had one for a while. The only reason I took notice of them was that they had a nice big grand-opening sale and we were shopping for a new TV. They seem to cater mostly to the AV/home theatre shopper, rather than the general computer/electronics nerd. Best Buy is all I've got now 🙁
