Unfortunately, I am not part of the marketing team and I can't really say how the guys there are deciding how to name the new drives.
I could always help with the differences if you need me to.

WD Gold drives feature the new HelioSeal technology as well as dedicated premium support. Some features include improved power efficiency, better performance, better reliability and capacities of 4TB, 6TB and 8TB. Most of this is done due to the Helium in the drive, but also with some tweaking of the electronics and the firmware. :)

OK, I got a small update regarding the WD Gold if you are interested. Though pretty similar to WD Re, this line offers improvements mainly in the power efficiency part and in performance in some way. The Helium technology is used only in the 8TB version and the WD Gold line will slowly replace the WD Re line. :) You can read more in the press release.
