HFS+ and NTFS or FAT32 partitions on the same drive

Would it be possible to have both Mac and PC partitions on the same external drive? I tried paritioning the drive in disk utility, but it would only let me format the partitions as either HSF+ or DOS (FAT32, I'm assuming) - not both. Is there any way to get around it? I heard it was possible in Panther, but I have Tiger installed at the moment.

Not sure, but why? FAT32 is natively recognized by both XP and OS X.
