The main question here is why would the OP be responsible for someone losing something on their property?

Can I make the government cover my car if it's stolen?

No but the government makes you have car insurance, which probably covers it.

huh wut?

Was away for awhile - sorry for the delay... Our babysitter never directly requested that we pay for the ring. She kind of hinted/fished for us to offer on several occasions.

I've actually borrowed a cheapo metal detector and spent a couple hours looking for it with no luck.

12 years ago my 10K gold class ring was only $270. So I wasn't buying that her silver ring was $400. Not once the has the girl volunteered to come over and look for it herself - further speculating that she is try to scam me. The girl's family is on the poorer side so I feel bad. But ultimately, its tough luck for her.

... what does a high school class ring cost now a days.

Our babysitter lost her class ring in my back yard and said it cost $400. But she only spent 15 minutes looking for it and hasn't come back in a week.

I personally think shes trying to scam us but my wife thinks she actually lost it.

It's correct. You're looking at between $300 and $500 at the school I graduated from. But you don't owe it to her to replace it.

lol high school rings

my feelings are the same, same thing i said about college rings, i prob would have purchased a college ring if they wernt so big and fucking ugly

Are they? When I was in high school, they only had the big ugly ones. But my brother graduated 3 years ago, and they had much nicer styles. His ring looks king of like a wedding band, it doesn't have the big fat top part.

If you tapped it then pay up otherwise if you do pay for it make sure she knows what she owes you.

Also we need pics.

$400 is incredibly high unless she goes to some elite private school where they have a small vial containing the blood and sweat of an American worker. Maybe $100 tops.

$100.00? :Q

😕 Were you in school in 1949 or something? My class ring was 10K gold and it cost $350 in 1989.

Uhhh... why would you have to pay for it? Oh wait, unless you were drilling her out in the backyard and were so forceful it dislodged the ring. Then id' say pay up. Yes, pay up... and well played, sir.

Winner! 😀
