Hey what's the best pepper spray system?

Sister's going to college soon. Want to give her a pepper spray system.

Have considered like a stun gun, but batteries do degrade and in all honesty there's a good chance the gun will be neglected until it's really needed.

Or are there any other options out there?

Go for the 'trifecta' ones. OC, CS, plus UV dye for extra hilarity.

Also, anything labeled 'bear mace' is usually good.

Wow, an opportunity to improve things for everyone! How about this? Teach your sister not to be a drunken, little cock-tease and that will negate your requirement for buying her pepper spray to begin with?

In our dear country, too many young women of college age mistake "I guess I should act like Jenna over there...she has SO many boyfriends!" behavior for "This is how a young lady at college should behave if she wants a future worth a damn."

Just sayin'.

Wow, this is sad beyond belief.

Not worth responding to that dude. Don't even quote him...just block him.

Speaking of pepper spray, there has got to be some good pepper spray stories out there...

The first thing you should do is make sure it is even legal to carry where she will be going...

The next thing to do is what has already been listed, keep in mind the active ingredient is something people can gain tolerance to so it will not always be effective.

Bear spray!

Will stop anybody did in their tracks and has a spread of 5 feet. Most effective thing on the planet this side of a shotgun.

As an FYI, Pepper spray is a joke.....worthless.

Get a can of Bear Spray at REI. Ask for it since they keep it in the back.

Although what you write is true, it doesn't mean OP's sister is a drunken little cock-tease.

I've always wondered which one was more effective... Only bear spray is "legal" in Canada.

I hear wasp spray works well too.

Though in the states, I'd probably just get a gun because everyone will have one anyway. Make sure she knows how to use it properly, and how to properly carry etc.. all the typical gun safety stuff.

Check the local laws of where she is going to see if it's legal first. Fox brand will do the trick. I've seen it stop the big dudes, drunk dudes, cracked up, etc. Skip the stun gun as they don't work for the most part and are just going to piss the guy off. They do make a consumer version of the real deal taser and that will stop anyone not on PCP in their tracks. Problem is five seconds and they are back up. For her quality pepper spray is going to be a better solution. Definitely skip any foam, they just suck. For self defense the cone versions will give a much wider spread than the stream.

Those of you recommending bear and wasp spray mean well I know, but keep in mind part of the item being useful is it's size and weight. Those sprays usually are more bulky - that can dissuade someone from carrying if they plan on traveling light, or it simply can't fit it into the purse of choice. It can't help if it's not with her.

Get the right tool for the job, but you do have to research them as they are definitely not all created equal. I recommend looking at Cold Steel and Foxlabs products. Both will make an assailant hate life in short order. I like the Cold Steel sprays for women myself. It's a really nasty foamy consistency. They also include black pepper extract for that extra punch to the airways, makes you inhale more nasty stuff. Many sizes, and they have great quality seals (very important). Anyone who says they are useless doesn't know what they are talking about. Get back to us when you've had one of the above mentioned brands shot in your face.

Get a few inert trainers too. Get her used to how they fire, then have her practice both a quick grab and spray, as well as the subtle sneaky draw and fire. Doing that with real spray can ruin your day if you mess up.

I'd pair it with something to harden the hand as well. Something like http://www.amazon.com/Safety-Cat-Wom.../dp/B004LUXICC
Proximity to the threat could negate the ability use a distance weapons, so don't leave her with just manicured nails to get her out of a bad spot.

The most important thing for young women is not what brand of spray they carry, or if they opt for baton instead of a stungun. Situational awareness and not being naive counts far more. No amount of self defense gear is going to help a girl if she is in the habit of hanging out with strangers, getting shitfaced in public, and/or is just plain oblivious to everything happening outside of 50ft from her location. Pretty much all of the girls I knew in college were guilty on that last one.

My baby sister is quite the knock out. She was a model for a time. I had to take her aside and spell out things that invite the attention of predators. Walking around in public with earbuds in is a no no. You don't go out to party at night alone. You always get your own drinks. Always have your own transportation plan for getting home, never rely on people you hardly know for anything. Don't be afraid to look people in the eye when they approach. Looking timid and meek only encourages assholes and bullies. Made her into a people watcher before I equipped her with self-defense tools.

Do you even need an assault canister filled with bear spray? She's dealing with random losers, not serial killers. Those guys will run away if any resistance is offered. Also size/asthetics are important - if she isn't going to keep it with her then teaching her how to throw a proper punch would probably be more useful.

Real bear spray

And even with that your odds aren't good if that pissed off momma bear comes at you through cover, from the side or from behind. The biggest problem is proximity to threat, (like most bad encounters) so in bear country bring your dog along for that hike, and maybe strap a bell or two to your gear. Noise is your friend.

You still need to make a good shot in a snap moment for that to stop one. I'm not sure how effective bear spray actually is, but I imagine it'd have less of an aiming requirement.

Of course, hence my citing of odds. A cone shaped fog does indeed cut down on the accuracy requirements, but then it is also subject to weather and the possibility of obstacles (the cover I mentioned) None of that will phase a bullet in the distances involved in a typical bear mauling.

Regardless of that though, I'm pretty sure 400gr of copper traveling 1800-2000FPS into brain matter or the spine would be more effective at stopping a furry, sharp toothed locomotive than searing it's eyes and nose with chemical hell, unpleasant and startling as it may be.

Yea, you're up a creek to a degree no matter what/how you try to stop it, and no doubt a slug to the brain, spine, or heart would stop it, but that's a hefty aiming requirement. Blinding the bear might be something that stops it in it's tracks or at least makes it incapable of continuing to accurately charge. I don't know how bears actually react to being maced so I'm not sure if it'd be really effective or terribly ineffective.
