If all the meth labs blew up at the same time in California we could have the first Republican colony on the moon. Progress!

Hehehe, California is tomorrows nation and world. We are a deadly virus that will destroy conservative thinking. It's California Girls everywhere, guys, and they actually like to have sex. You won't have to be an Alpha Jackass to get one. And many have nice color to their skin. No more ugly pink babies. Ah, you poor fucks, by the time the truth arrives in your backwater, you'll all have limp dicks.

What part of the article does not ring true to you? Do you think California's rate of spending is sustainable?

With increased taxes perhaps. The business and reaction from indviduals who are affected most will be telling. THere is a bit of temper trantrum from those being forced to pay more, but I don't think many will leave.

You'd be nuts not to be trying to snag a public sector job in Cali at this point though.

You can gaze upon them, but only with condoms now from afar. :D

Well, or at least the next county over. ;)

My favorite part of the article........

Then there's the more than $200 billion in unfunded liabilities the state has accrued for worker retirement benefits, which this year cost taxpayers $6.5 billion. The California State Teachers' Retirement System says it needs an additional $3.5 billion and $10 billion annually for the next 30 years to amortize its debt.

Anybody else notice how there is no way possible (even with Prop 30 on steroids) we will ever fill that black hole?? Doh.....wait.......I actually mispoke. Prop 30 has nothing to do with those pensions, it goes directly to the classroom.

Silly me.... :p ;)

I expect their budget to be balanced within two years now that Republicans are out of the way. Just like in my liberaltopia state of CT where we wallowed in "unsustainable" debt for 20+ years under Republican rule until 2010 when we finally wisened up and elected Dan Malloy as governor, a Democrat.

Economies of scale aside, you guys still don't have the same problems we have here. And don't worry.....whatever Malloy thinks he can budget for annually.......the public service agencies can gobble up with ease in the stroke of a pen. Or...errrr......"pension"!!

I wonder what the red states would do without the money California sends them to prop up thier failed states?

State governments do not get money from the government to "prop" them up. The majority of the difference you are seeing in what states put in and get out is due to Social Security, as those with higher income subsidize those with lower income social security. Red states tend to have more people on the lower income scale.

maybe.

maybe not.

one thing I know, is that the predictions coming from these type of ..."information" sources over the recent months have been shown to be, eh, "hilariously inaccurate" in recent days.

We shall see.
But CA is mostly fucked, but the state will continue on just fine. I don't think anything would have really changed that on Tuesday. It could be that it has been the inability to get anything done that is the root cause of CA's problems, so, who knows...

If we are screwed we can always go with plan B: break off into the pacific to hang with Hawaii.

CO and WA can come too.

California is the worst. Nobody wants to live there. It has nothing, no entertainment industry, no tech industry, no tourism, nothing. It's a wasteland.

Everyone wants to live in the conservative places like Kentucky instead. That's where real progress is made!

Places like Kentucky are for folks who lack ambition and whose ancestors easily settled: "Hey, let's go west... ah sod it, this is good 'nuff. Also, squirrel is tasty and my cousin is purty."

But...it's the south. They're so wealthy there. Look at them. They may be missing half their teeth and live in poverty and only have electricity after the federal government gave it to them, but they have god.

Well, I hope they send a thank you card to the rich blue states that put them in that position.

Then again California was doing great right up until a guy name Reagan became governor and a guy named Norquist got proposition 13 passed. And of course a Republican governor name Pete Wilson presided over the biggest heist in US history when companies like Enron stole billions out of the pockets of Californians.

Well, I guess Californians are now going to have to pay a higher income tax. Fortunately their very high salaries mean they are still doing better than the red state leeches with thier low tax, low service, low salary, low cost outhouses and shacks.

To be fair, there are certain parts of California that are pretty bad. They're all pretty red, too. Seems to be a trend...hmmm...

Incorrect.

In Mississippi, the 2007 budget was composed of $8.4 billion from state-source funds, and $5.9 billion from federal funds. Over 40% of Mississippi’s state budget that year came from the federal government, and of that over half came from out-of-state taxpayers, including liberal elites in places like New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut.

http://stonesoup.wordpress.com/2011/06/07/federal-funding-received-by-state-per-dollar-sent/

I doubt it's any different today.
