I always leave the top two buttons undone on my long/short sleeve button down shirts. I always wear an undershirt though; no one wants to see my skinny body. I think the buttons undone look better than all done up.

I'm the opposite, I hate wearing undershirts and unless I get dress shirts taylored they don't fit my chest and neck so I always button to the top - minus the tie button. If I need to wear a tie, I have to go up a few sizes which are really baggy and bad looking in the midsection. ..so anotherwords...no win.
